Finlandia Softball Wins Two – Thursday Sports Wrap

Two Upper Peninsula boys high school basketball teams have reached the quarterfinals of the state tournament. Last night, defending state champion North Central steamrolled Forest Park 75-45 to win a Class D regional title. Westwood continued its unlikely tournament run with a 50-45 victory over Norway.

Stephenson is the only girls team still alive in the tournament. The Eagles will face Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart in the semifinals tonight. We will broadcast the girls Class C and D title games Saturday on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

The Finlandia University softball team earned its first two wins of the season yesterday at the Cobber Classic in the Twin Cities. In the first game, the Lions spotted Bethany Lutheran College a five-run lead in the first inning, but roared back with nine runs of their own in the second, on the way to an 18-10 victory. In their second game of the day, Finlandia defeated North Central University 11-4. Brooke Pasanen gave up just two hits, and earned a complete-game win. The Lions will wrap up play today against Concordia College at 9:00, and Bethany Lutheran at 1:00.

Michigan Tech hockey player Alex Petan has been named one of 10 finalists for the Hobey Baker Memorial Award, which is presented each year to the top player in college hockey. Petan has already been named the WCHA Player of the Year. He’s the fourth Baker finalist in MTU history, joining joining Jamie Ram from 1994… Colin Murphy from 2005… and Tanner Kero from last season.

The University of Michigan earned a berth in the NCAA Division One Men’s Basketball Tournament with a 67-62 victory over Tulsa in their play-in game last night. The Wolverines will assume an 11th seed in the East Region, and will face Notre Dame in the first round tomorrow night. Michigan State is the second seed in the Midwest, and will open against Middle Tennessee State tomorrow afternoon. Our coverage of the tournament begins today at noon on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

The Detroit Pistons lost to the Atlanta Hawks 118-114 last evening. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led all scorers with 24 points. Andre Drummond had 18 points and grabbed 18 rebounds, but was fouled frequently by Atlanta, and sank less than half of his free throws. The Pistons will host the Sacramento Kings tomorrow night.

In spring training baseball, Jordan Zimmermann pitched three scoreless innings, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Houston Astros 7-3 yesterday. Ian Kinsler, Bryan Holaday and minor-leaguer Mike Gerber homered for Detroit. The Tigers face the Cardinals this afternoon.

Tigers starter Anibal Sanchez threw 45 pitches in a simulated game yesterday, and said he felt fine. Sanchez has been sidelined by triceps inflammation and a bronchial illness. He could make his spring debut on Monday.

The Milwaukee Brewers downed the Chicago White Sox 5-2 yesterday. Matt Garza turned in four shutout innings, and Jonathan Lucroy homered. Ryan Braun singled and scored a run in his first action of the spring. He’s recovering from back surgery. The Brewers will face the Rangers tonight.
