In hockey last night…
• Houghton edged Marquette 3-2. Goals by Kade Farrell and Connor Raffaelli gave the Gremlins an early 2-0 lead. After the Redmen came back to tie the contest, Nathan Erva scored the game-winner in overtime.

• Houghton outscored Kingsford 64-33.

• Chassell outpointed Baraga 79-57. Karl Rautiola scored 38.

On the boys schedule this afternoon…
• Calumet plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. JV tipoff is at 1:00, with the varsity at 2:30.
Both Copper Country Christian School teams lost again at Maplewood Baptist Academy yesterday. The boys fell 69-40 – Caleb Bach scored 10 points. Nora Holmes scored 10 in the 60-22 girls loss.
At the Upper Peninsula High School diving championships yesterday, Houghton’s Quinn Aho placed third. behind a pair of divers from Sault Ste. Marie. The swim championships will take place today at Marquette.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 3-1 in the first game of its Western Collegiate Hockey Association quarterfinal match-up at Bemidji State last night. Brian Halonen gave the Huskies an early advantage, but the Beavers took the lead by the end of the first period, and added an insurance tally in the second. Tech outshot BSU 34-26. Blake Pietila took the loss in net. Game two will be played tonight, with game three tomorrow, if needed.
Northern Michigan University spotted 13th-ranked Bowling Green an early lead, then came back to claim a 3-2 victory in their tournament opener. That series continues tonight in Ohio.
In the other quarterfinal series, Lake Superior State routed Alabama Huntsville 6-1, and top-seeded Minnesota State blanked Ferris State 3-0.
College Basketball
The Finlandia University men’s basketball team wrapped up its season with a 76-68 loss to Riverland Community College last night. Dylan Underwood scored 21 in his final game as a Lion.
From the NCAA Division II basketball tournament last night…
• At the women’s regional in Springfield, Missouri, Ashland eliminated Grand Valley State 68-60. The Eagles will face top-seed Michigan Tech this evening at 6:00.
• At the men’s regional in Evansville, Indiana, Lewis plays Southern Indiana tonight at 9:30. The winner will take on second seeded Michigan Tech tomorrow night at 9:30.
The Finlandia University basketball team has added another member. Albert Bibbins is from Mansura, Louisiana. He has also committed to play for the Lions football team.
College Volleyball
The Michigan Tech volleyball team defeated 25th-ranked Ferris State 3-2 yesterday afternoon. After winning the first set, the Huskies dropped the next two, then came from behind to earn the win. Olivia Ghormley had 20 kills, Laura De Marchi had 60 assists, and Megan Utlak had 27 digs. Those teams play again today at noon in Houghton.
The NMU volleyball team blanked Northwood 3-0 yesterday. Those teams play again today in Marquette.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow. Coverage begins at 4:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons visit the Brooklyn Nets tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Pistons have sent Svi Mykhailiuk to the Oklahoma City Thunder, in exchange for Hamidou Diallo. The Thunder will also get a second-round draft pick in 2027. Diallo is 22, and has averaged 12 points per game. He’s considered a more athletic player than Mykhailiuk, although Mykhailiuk is regarded as a better pure shooter.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers lost to the New York Yankees 4-2 in Grapefruit League play yesterday. Starter Julio Teheran allowed two runs on four hits over three innings.
The Tigers play the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Casey Mize is scheduled to start for Detroit.
In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Chicago Cubs 8-3 yesterday. Starter Brandon Woodruff gave up five hits over two innings, but didn’t allow a run. Hopefuls Dylan Cozens and Billy McKinney homered.
The Brewers will face the Texas Rangers this afternoon. Drew Rasmussen is scheduled to start.
Great Bear Chase
This year’s Great Bear Chase will be held today at the Swedetown Trails. As usual, the event will feature 50k, 25k and 10k freestyle and classic races, along with a 50k skiathlon. Because of COVID-19 limitations, the number of participants was reduced to 550, and no spectators will be allowed at the start or finish.
