MLB
Justin Upton’s first-inning home run wasn’t enough for the Detroit Tigers, who fell to the Baltimore Orioles 5-2 Saturday. Fill-in starter Drew VerHagen gave up two runs over five innings. The Orioles took the lead when Wellington Castillo hit a solo homer off Joe Jimenez in the seventh inning, and broke the game open with two runs off Edward Mujica in the eighth.

The Tigers wrap up that series at Baltimore this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will start against Ubaldo Jimenez. Pregame coverage begins at 1:10 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers threw their second straight shutout Saturday, blanking the Tampa Bay Rays 3-0. Zach Davies gave up just one hit over seven innings. Jacob Barnes and Anthony Swarzak completed the effort. Milwaukee pitchers have not allowed a run in 22 consecutive innings. Orlando Arcia gave Milwaukee an early lead when he doubled home Keon Broxton in the third inning. Hernán Pérez’ two-run homer in the ninth provided some insurance.

The Brewers conclude that set at Tampa Bay this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Chris Archer.

Milwaukee third baseman Travis Shaw left the game after being hit in the neck by a throw as he stole second base in the second inning. He suffered a bruise, but passed the concussion protocol, and is considered day-to-day.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings have signed a three-year contract with Michael Rasmussen, their first choice in the recent NHL amateur draft. Financial details were not released. Rasmussen played last season for the WHL Tri-City Americans. At age 18, it’s likely he’ll spend this year in junior hockey, as well.

Copperman Triathlon
Houghton’s Stephen Eles edged out Cody Kayser from Grand Rapids by less than a minute, and won his third straight Copperman Triathlon Saturday in Copper Harbor. Laurien Smith of Atlantic Mine was the fastest woman. Luke Rambo of Marquette took the Duathlon title, finishing more than two minutes ahead of Calumet’s Mitchell Delong. Nicole Ferrin from Weston, Wisconsin, claimed the women’s title.
