MLB
The Oakland Athletics pounded out 17 hits, and ripped the Detroit Tigers 12-3 Saturday. Fill-in starter Matt Boyd held the A’s at bay for a while, giving up three runs over the five innings he worked. Victor Martinez’ homer in the top of the sixth tied the game at three. The floodgates opened in the bottom of the sixth. Oakland scored five times against relievers Warwick Saupold and Kyle Ryan. Saupold was charged with all five runs, and took the loss. They added four more runs off Alex Wilson in the seventh.
The Tigers wrap up that series at Oakland this afternoon. Mike Pelfrey will pitch against Rich Hill. Hear the first pitch at 4:05 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Cincinnati Reds 7-6 Saturday. The Crew led 6-1 going into the seventh inning, thanks in part to a two-run homer and an RBI single by Jonathan Lucroy. Cincinnati tied it with five runs off reliever Michael Blazek in the top of the seventh. The big blow was a three-run homer by Adam Duvall. In the top of the ninth, the Reds loaded the bases with one out. Closer Jeremy Jeffress got Duvall to hit into what appeared to be an inning-ending double play. However, a video review showed that second baseman Scooter Gennett had failed to touch the bag before making the throw to first. That allowed the winning run to score.
The Brewers host the Reds again this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Brandon Finnegan.
