The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the fourth inning, and held on to edge the New York Mets 6-5 Saturday night. Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Miguel Cabrera each drove in two runs with singles in the big inning. Cabrera also doubled home Detroit’s first run in the first inning. Matt Boyd gave up three runs over five innings, and earned the win. Justin Wilson allowed two runs in the seventh. Francisco Rodriguez gave up three straight singles with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, but J.D. Martinez ended the game by making a perfect throw from right field to Saltalamacchia at the plate to cut down Jay Bruce as he tried to score the tying run.

The Tigers host the Mets again this afternoon. Anibal Sanchez will pitch against Jacob deGrom. Hear the first pitch at 1:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Cleveland also won yesterday, so Detroit still trails the Indians by two games in the American League Central.

Saturday’s victory was a costly one for Detroit. Third baseman Nick Castellanos broke a bone in his left hand when he was hit by a pitch. He’ll miss at least a month. Casey McGehee has been brought up from Toledo to fill in. The Tigers also sent pitcher Jordan Zimmermann back to the disabled list because of tightness in his back. Daniel Norris will take his place in the starting rotation. Cameron Maybin missed his third straight game Saturday. He’ll be out until the swelling around his sprained thumb goes down.

The Milwaukee Brewers blasted the Arizona Diamondbacks 16-6 Saturday night. Ryan Braun hit two home runs and drove in seven. Keon Broxton had five hits, and Jonathan Villar added four. Matt Garza pitched six shutout innings, but left as the D’Backs scored four times in the seventh. He earned the win.

The Brewers conclude that set against the Diamondbacks in Arizona this afternoon. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Archie Bradley.

The National Football League preseason schedule kicks off tonight at 8:00 as the Green Bay Packers face the Indianapolis Colts in the Hall of Fame Game. Hear the game on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Kellen Winslow, Jr., is getting a tryout with the Packers. Winslow was a top-10 pick in the 2004 draft, but his career was frustrated by injuries, attitude and substance abuse problems. He’s now 33 years old, and hasn’t played since the 2013 season.

Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron was hurt during a mock game on Saturday. Ebron was taken off the field on a cart with an apparent right leg injury. There’s no word as to how serious it might be.
