Eles, McCloud, Sayen Repeat As Canal Run Winners – Sunday Sports Wrap

Michael Pineda suffered the worst start of his career Saturday, as the Tigers fell to the Guardians 10-0. Pineda gave up eight runs on nine hits – including two home runs to José Ramírez – through two innings. Detroit used four relievers, and another mound appearance by Harold Castro, to finish the game. Tigers batters collected just five hits.

The Tigers visit the Guardians again this afternoon. Tyler Alexander will come out of the bullpen to start against Shane Bieber. Coverage will begin at 1:20 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jandel Gustave balked home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning, as the Brewers lost to the Giants 2-1 Saturday. Eric Lauer turned in a fine start, giving up a run on two hits over seven innings. Milwaukee had tied the game in the top of the eighth on a sacrifice fly by Omar Narváez

The Brewers visit the Giants again tonight. Aaron Ashby will start against Logan Webb.

Running

Stephen Eles of Boulder, Colorado, won the half-marathon at Saturday’s Hancock Canal Run. Eles finished more than 10 minutes ahead of Kate McCloud of Atlantic Mine, who was the top women’s finisher, and placed second overall. Eles has won six of the last seven Canal Run half-marathons. It’s the fourth women’s title for McCloud.

Houghton’s Clayton Sayen won the 10-mile run for the third straight time. The MTU distance running standout finished 82 seconds ahead of Hancock’s Drew Kolodge. Samantha Saenz of Concord, Michigan, was the fastest woman.

Ryan Melen of Hancock took the five-mile run, 30 seconds better than Luke Hill of Houghton. Houghton’s Ingrid Seagren won the women’s title.

Liddy Markham of Houghton earned top honors in the 10-mile walk. Paul Halonen of Calumet won the men’s division, and was second overall.

Robert Haase of Calumet won the five-mile walk. Amy Hughes of Hancock placed second overall, and was first in the women’s division.
