Eles Dominates Canal Half-Marathon – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB – Tigers Blanked
Chris Tillman held Detroit batters to just one hit over eight innings, as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Tigers 3-0 last night. David Price suffered the hard-luck loss for Detroit, giving up just one run over seven innings. The Orioles scored two insurance runs off Bruce Rondon in the ninth.

The Tigers conclude that home set against the Orioles this afternoon. Justin Verlander will start against Miguel Gonzalez. Hear the first pitch at 1:08 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Milwaukee Brewers scored in six different innings, and beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 8-5 last night. The Brewers fell behind early, when the Pirates scored three runs in the first off Jimmy Nelson. Nelson settled in, and pitched into the seventh to earn the win. Jonathan Lucroy, Aramis Ramirez and Khris Davis homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers wrap up that series with the Pirates this afternoon. Taylor Jungmann will pitch against Jeff Locke.

State Senior Softball Tourney Continues – Esky Continues to Dominate
2015 LL Softball Tourney LogoEscanaba continued its domination of the Michigan State Little League Senior Girls Softball Tournament Saturday. Esky shut out Keweenaw 13-0, then blanked Melvindale 19-0. Keweenaw defeated Melvindale 12-5 in the final game yesterday.

On Friday,  Melvindale won the opening game of the day with a 7-5 victory over Keweenaw in eight innings. In the second game, Escanaba rolled over Keweenaw 19-5, and Esky completed the day with a 13-0 shutout of Melvindale.

Keweenaw and Escanaba will play in the championship game this morning at 10:00 at the Boneyard in Lake Linden. The public is welcome. Check the full schedule here.

Eles Rules Canal Run
Canal Run LogoStephen Eles of Houghton won the half-marathon at the Canal Run yesterday morning in convincing fashion. Eles finished more than 11 minutes ahead of  Travis Dipalma of Norwood, New York. Kristin Thompson of Zimmerman, Minnesota was the top women’s finisher. In the 10-mile run, Jonathan Kilpela took first place, four minutes ahead of Mickey Bartkowiak of Houghton. Jessica Nankervis of Laurium was the top female finisher. Mark Hallman from Amasa won the five-mile run, finishing a little less than two minutes ahead of Clayton Sayen of Houghton. Lisa Wiitala from Hancock took women’s honors.

Ray Sharp from Atlantic Mine won the 10-mile walk, and Jill Honkala from Hopkins, Minnesota finished first in the five-mile walk.
