In hockey last night…
• Houghton blanked Negaunee 9-0. The Gremlins scored seven times in the second period to end the game early because of the mercy rule. Landon Stevens had four goals for Houghton. Nathan Erva added two. Camden Markham had a goal and three assists. Milo Schafer, and Brandon Norkol also scored. Matthew Ryynanen got the easy shutout in net, as the Gremlins outshot the Miners 43-4.
• Hancock stopped Kingsford 7-1. Calvin Heinonen had two goals and an assist. The Bulldogs outshot the Flivvers 40-10.

In girls basketball last night…
• Calumet shut down L’Anse 74-33. Five Copper Kings scored in double figures, led by Alexis Strom and Laina Kariniemi with 13 each. Maija Rice scored 14 for the Purple Hornets.

• Baraga cruised past Chassell 55-25. Rylie Koskinen scored 18 for the Vikings.
• Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Ontonagon 36-28.
In boys basketball last evening…
• Houghton lost at Gwinn 35-25.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Hancock 48-27.
• Calumet fell to Negaunee 60-39.
• Chassell got past Baraga 65-54. Karl Rautiola and Kolson Kytta each scored 25 for the Panthers.
• Ewen-Trout Creek shut down Ontonagon 66-26.

In high school swimming yesterday…
• In their final meet of the regular season, Houghton swept the Ishpeming-Negaunee team, with the boys winning 100-61, and the girls 134-28. Multiple winners included Leah Komarzec in the girls 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly, Archer Olson in the boys 200 individual medley and the 500 freestyle, Conner Holombo in the boys 50 and 100 freestyles, and Davin Evans in the 100 butterfly and 100 breaststroke. Quinn Aho bested his own previous school record in diving.
College Basketball
The Northern Michigan University women’s basketball team ended its season with a 61-45 loss to Davenport University in the opening round of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament last night.
As the top seed in the tournament, the Michigan Tech women’s team had a bye in the opening round. The Huskies will face Davenport in the quarterfinals tomorrow morning at 11:00. The tourney is being hosted by Purdue Northwest in Westville, Indiana.
The Tech women’s team is ranked ninth this week in the WBCA Coaches’ Poll.
The Tech men’s team will face Purdue Northwest in the tournament quarterfinals tomorrow in Hammond, Indiana.

College Football
The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Ethan Lakosky is a tight end who was team captain at Munising High School.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 to the Columbus Blue Jackets last evening. Anthony Mantha scored Detroit’s only goal. Jonathan Bernier gave up all four goals, and was replaced by Thomas Greiss in the third period.

The Detroit Pistons’ game against Toronto last night was postponed until tonight. At this point, it looks as if the Raptors have cleared COVID-19 testing, and will be able to play.
MLB
Willi Castro hit his second home run of the spring, as the Detroit Tigers defeated the Pittsburgh Pirates yesterday 6-1 in a five-inning game yesterday. Casey Mize threw two hitless innings. He walked three, and struck out three.
The Tigers face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon. Daniel Norris is expected to open for Detroit. Coverage begins at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Milwaukee Brewers fell 2-1 to the Oakland Athletics yesterday.
