MLB
The Tigers and Orioles split their doubleheader Saturday. Detroit rapped out 16 hits on the way to a 7-4 victory in the opener. Eduardo Rodriguez turned in another fine start, pitching into the sixth, and allowing one run on four hits. Called up from Toledo to be the extra player for the twin bill, Zach Short had three hits, including a home run, and made a couple of sparkling defensive plays. Matt Vierling had three hits, and drove in four runs.
The Tigers fell behind 6-0 in the nightcap, as starter Matthew Boyd struggled. Detroit got four runs back in the bottom of the sixth, with help from a three-run Tyler Nevin pinch hit home run, but couldn’t get any closer.
The Tigers will wrap up that home set against the Orioles this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Kyle Bradish. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Short will remain with the Tigers. Nevin will be returned to Toledo to make room on the roster. The Tigers also called infielder Andy Ibáñez up from the Mud Hens before Saturday’s games. He’ll replace Kerry Carpenter, who was added to the injury list with a sprained shoulder.
The Brewers held off the Angels 7-5 Saturday. Corbin Burnes earned the win, giving up a run on five hits over six innings. William Contreras and Jesse Winker each drove in two runs.
The Brewers welcome the Angels again this afternoon. Colin Rae will start against Jose Suarez.
Former Milwaukee reliever Javy Guerra is heading back to the Rays. The Crew obtained Guerra from Tampa Bay in an off-season trade. After designating him for assignment last week, the Rays offered $75,000 cash or a player to be named later to reclaim him.
NFL
After deploying six picks in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft, the Lions had just two picks available over the final four rounds Saturday. The selected William and Mary offensive tackle Colby Sorsdal in the fifth round, and North Carolina receiver Antoine Green in the seventh.
With no apparent room for running back D’Andre Swift on the Detroit roster, the Lions traded him to the Eagles Saturday. In exchange, the teams swapped seventh-round picks in this year’s draft, and the Eagles gave the Lions their fourth-round selection in 2025. Swift showed flashes of greatness with the Lions, but was frequently injured.
The Packers had a whopping nine picks over the final four rounds. Green Bay took Auburn linebacker Colby Wooden in the fourth round, and added Penn State quarterback Sean Clifford and Virginia receiver Dontayvion Wicks in the fifth. In the sixth, they selected Bowling Green linebacker Karl Brooks and Auburn kicker Anders Carlson. In the seventh round, they claimed Kentucky cornerback Carrington Valentine, Central Michigan running back Lew Nichols III, Iowa State safety Anthony Johnson Jr., and Charlotte receiver Grant DuBose.
Former Ewen-Trout Creek and Northern Michigan University standout Jake Witt was selected in the seventh round by the Colts. Witt entered the draft as an offensive tackle, after playing just 14 games at that position for the Wildcats, but he impressed a number of pro scouts with his overall athleticism during pre-draft workouts. Ahead of the draft, Witt spoke with Kenny Ericson of Kendog Sports. See the interview here.
