E-TC Advances to Boys Hoops State Semifinals – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Ewen-Trout Creek moved into the semifinals of the state boys basketball tournament with a 56-40 victory over Rudyard last night. The Panthers led by just two points early in the third quarter, but strong late play by Jaden Borseth sealed the win. The Panthers will face Leelanau Saint Mary in the semifinals tomorrow at 5:30 at the Breslin Center. Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian will take on Genesee Christian in the other semifinal. See highlights from last night’s game here.

One other U.P. team is heading to East Lansing. Menominee dispatched Grayling 70-39 in their quarterfinal match last night, and will play Ecorse in the semifinals tomorrow at noon.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team has added a new recruit. James Pham earned all-conference honors at Archbishop Hannah High School in Madisonville, Louisiana.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings doubled up the Philadelphia Flyers 6-3 last night. Jakub Vrana scored twice. Lucas Raymond netted his 20th of the season. Alex Nedeljkovic made 30 saves.

The Wings visit the New York Islanders tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Atlanta Hawks tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 7-2 to the Philadelphia Phillies yesterday. Tyler Alexander opened with two scoreless innings, but the Phillies scored three off Drew Hutchison, and added four off Jacob Barnes and Brandon White in the sixth. Dustin Garneau homered for Detroit.

The Tigers will face the Pittsburgh Pirates this afternoon.

Detroit avoided arbitration with seven players yesterday. Third baseman Jeimer Candelario, pitchers Michael Fulmer, Jose Cisnero and Joe Jimenez, catcher Dustin Garneau, utility man Harold Castro and outfielder Victor Reyes agreed to contracts. Pitcher Spencer Turnbull did not agree to a contract, and will take his chances in arbitration. Turnbull is recovering from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery, and could miss the entire season.

The Milwaukee Brewers fell to the Chicago White Sox 4-3 yesterday.

The Brewers will play the Cincinnati Reds tonight.

Milwaukee has agreed to terms with nine of their 10 arbitration-eligible players. Pitcher Adrian Houser is the only one headed to arbitration.

The practice of teams opening extra innings with a runner at second base will apparently continue this summer. Players have approved the idea, and owners are reported to be likely to agree.
