MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the sixth inning, and earned a waterlogged 6-1 victory over the California Angels last night. The outburst came after the second rain delay of the evening. It included RBI singles from José Iglesias, Leonys Martin and Nicholas Castellanos. Mike Fiers survived the first rain delay, and gave up just one run before he was replaced in the top of the sixth following the second pause. Louis Coleman got the win in relief.
The Tigers conclude that series against the Angels this afternoon. Ryan Carpenter has been brought up from Toledo to start for Detroit. Andrew Heaney will pitch for the Halos. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Carpenter was recalled because scheduled starter Francisco Liriano has been placed on the disabled list with a strained hamstring. Reliever Daniel Stumpf has also landed on the DL, with an ulnar nerve problem in his pitching elbow. Johnny Barbato has been brought up from Toledo to fill that spot. The Tigers now have six front-line players on the DL.
The Milwaukee Brewers edged the St. Louis Cardinals 3-2 yesterday. Junior Guerra pitched six scoreless innings, and left with a 1-0 lead. That disappeared when the Cardinals scored twice in the top of the seventh off Jeremy Jeffress. Ironically, Jeffress wound up with the win when Milwaukee scored twice in the bottom of the seventh. Christian Yelich’s home run tied the contest, and Orlando Arcia singled home the game-winner.
The Brewers have today off, and begin an interleague series against the White Sox in Chicago tomorrow night. Chase Anderson will pitch against Hector Santiago.
Arcia is back with the Brewers because shortstop Tyler Saladino has been placed on the DL. Saladino sprained an ankle in Tuesday night’s game.
NHL
The Capitals edged the Golden Knights 3-2 last night, to tie the Stanley Cup series at one win per team. Game three will be played Saturday in Washington.
NBA
the NBA Championship Series will open tonight, as the Warriors host the Cavaliers.
