Drummond Rules as Pistons Win Season Opener – Thursday Sports Wrap

GLIAC

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team plays an exhibition at Wisconsin-Green Bay tonight.

The Tech men’s basketball team has been picked to finish third in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletics Conference North Division this season. In their preseason poll, coaches picked Ferris State to finish first, and Wisconsin-Parkside second. Northern Michigan University was picked to finish last. Davenport University was picked to win the South Division. Forward Kyle Monroe and guard Dawson Bilski of the Huskies were selected to the GLIAC Preseason All-Conference Team.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak reached six games last night, with a 5-2 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Darren Helm and Tyler Bertuzzi scored early in the second period to give Detroit a 2-1 lead, before the Senators scored four unanswered goals to pull away. Jonathan Bernier made 33 saves.

The Wings host the Buffalo Sabres tomorrow night. We’ll join the game in progress after our coverage of the Copper Bowl contest on 99.3 The Lift.

Defenseman Jonathan Ericsson has cleared waivers, and elected to stay in the Red Wings organization. He’ll be assigned to play for the Grand Rapids Griffins. The Wings also recalled also recalled defenseman Alex Biega, who had been assigned to the Griffins on Tuesday.

NBA

Andre Drummond carried the load, as the Detroit Pistons opened their NBA season with a 119-110 comeback victory over the Indiana Pacers last night. Playing without star Blake Griffin, Drummond scored 32 points and grabbed 23 rebounds. Luke Kennard added a career-high 30 points.

The Pistons play their home opener tonight against the Atlanta Hawks.

MLB

The Washington Nationals pounded the Houston Astros 12-3 last night to take a two games to none lead in the World Series. Game three will be played tomorrow in Washington.

NFL

With running back Kerryon Johnson out for most of the rest of the season following knee surgery, the Detroit Lions have signed running back Paul Perkins from their practice squad.
