Dollar Bay, Hancock Advance to Hoops District Final – Friday Sports Wrap

In the boys high school basketball tournament…

In Division Four District 98, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City avenged two regular-season losses to Chassell by defeating the Panthers 70-55 last night. Ashton Janke led the Blue Bolts with 25 points. Elijah Soumis had 21 for the Panthers.

Hancock eliminated Baraga 67-29.

The Bulldogs and Blue Bolts will meet for the District title tonight at 7:00 at the Dollar Bay gym.

In Division Four District 97 at Ewen-Trout Creek, the host Panthers will take on Bessemer for the title tonight.

In Division Three, Calumet plays at Iron Mountain. Pregame coverage will start around 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

In girls regular high school basketball last night…

  • Hancock defeated Jeffers 47-28. Marina Kero had 16 for the Bulldogs.
  • L’Anse shut down Lake Linden-Hubbell 63-17.
  • Chassell smothered Republic-Michigamme 75-30.
  • Ontonagon stuffed Watersmeet 52-22.
  • Ewen-Trout Creek edged Baraga 55-52 in overtime.

There’s one final game on the regular-season girls schedule tonight – Ewen-Trout Creek plays at Watersmeet.

MTU/NMU

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team clinched the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division title last night, with a 60-55 victory over Northern Michigan University. Tech used a strong second quarter to open up an eight-point halftime lead, then held on down the stretch. Abbie Botz and Ellie Mackay led a balanced Huskies attack with 12 points each. The Huskies are the number-three seed in the GLIAC tournament, and will host Northwood University Tuesday night. The Wildcats will entertain Ferris State in their tourney opener on Tuesday.

The MTU men’s team lost to NMU 74-53. Jake Witt led Tech with 14 points and eight rebounds. The Huskies end their season with a record of 12-15. The Wildcats will open the GLIAC tournament at Ferris State Tuesday.

Rivalry weekend continues with a home-and-home series between the Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan hockey teams. Tonight’s game begins at 7:07 at the John Macinnes Student Ice Arena. Tomorrow’s contest starts at 7:00 in Marquette.

The Detroit Tigers scored five runs in the first inning, then held off the Atlanta Braves 7-6 yesterday. Harold Castro homered for Detroit. The Tigers will face the New York Mets this afternoon. Listen for Tigers baseball again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

Half of the Milwaukee Brewers outslugged the Cincinnati Reds 10-8 yesterday. Mike Moustakis homered. The other half of the Crew lost to the San Francisco Giants 6-2. Erik Kratz hit a home run. The Brewers will play the Seattle Mariners today.

CopperDog 150

The 10th running of the CopperDog 150 will have a new look this weekend. A third race has been added, to attract mushers with smaller kennels. The new CopperDog 25 will be a single-stage downhill sprint from the starting line in Calumet to the finish line in Gay, using six-dog teams. The two-stage CopperDog 80 will use eight-dog teams this year, with the three-stage CopperDog 150 continuing to use 10-dog teams. Both the 150 and the 80 will end Sunday afternoon in Calumet. All three races will begin tonight in downtown Calumet. Pre-race activities will start around 6:20, with the first musher leaving the gate at 7:00.
