‘Dogs, Jets Earn Volleyball Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball yesterday…
• Hancock swept Chassell 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-17). For the Panthers, Kierah Hietala had three aces and seven assists, Emma Goddard four kills and one ace, and Trisha Pietila had two kills and one ace.
• Jeffers got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-2 (21-25, 25-19, 25-20, 21-25, 15-7).
• Ewen-Trout Creek v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

On the volleyball schedule today…
• Houghton travels to Gwinn.
• Calumet hosts West Iron County.

The local cross country season opens today with the Jeffers Invitational at the Kilpela Farm.

MLB

The Tigers fell to the Mariners 9-3 last night. Matt Manning didn’t make it through the third inning, was charged with seven runs, and took the loss. Miguel Cabrera and Kerry Carpenter each had two hits.

The Tigers entertain the Mariners again tonight. Tyler Alexander will start against Marco Gonzales. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Pirates scored three late runs, and downed the Brewers 4-2 last evening. Jason Alexander turned in a good start, giving up a run over five innings. Kolten Wong homered. Brad Boxberger took the loss in relief.

The Brewers host the Pirates again this afternoon. Freddy Peralta will start for Milwaukee.

Rowdy Tellez missed last night’s game because of knee discomfort. He tweaked the joint while running the bases Monday, and is considered day-to-day.

NFL

NFL teams reduced their rosters to 53 players yesterday.

The Lions cuts included linebacker Anthony Pittman, defensive tackle Bruce Hector and cornerback AJ Parker. Linebacker Jarrad Davis and tight end Devin Funchess were also let go – both were veterans hoping to revive their careers.

The Packers retained only two running backs, Aaron Jones and AJ Dillon.

The rosters announced yesterday are transient – players who were released can sign with other teams.
