‘Dogs, Gladiators and Jets Earn Volleyball Wins – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school volleyball last night…
• Hancock swept Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-0.
• L’Anse fell to Bessemer 3-2.
• Ontonagon swept Chassell 3-0 (25-11, 25-19, 25-10).
• Jeffers blanked Watersmeet 3-0 (25-15, 25-22, 25-20).
• Baraga lost to Ironwood 3-1.

There were no changes at the top of the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters high school football poll this week. Menominee leads the 11-player division, with Marquette second, Westwood and Negaunee tied for third, and Calumet fifth. North Central dominates the eight-player poll, with Pickford second, and Forest Park third. After defeating Forest Park Saturday, Lake Linden-Hubbell moves up to fourth, with Munising fifth.

At the eighth grade girls basketball tournament in Calumet last evening…
• Hancock defeated Lake Linden-Hubbell 41-23. Emery Chynoweth led Hancock with 12 points. Isabella Tampas scored nine for Lake Linden.
• Houghton downed Calumet 53-30. Kiara Markham led Houghton with 21 points. Kiirsi Johnson had 15 for Calumet.
• Hancock and Houghton will meet for the title tomorrow night at Calumet High School.

College Soccer

The Finlandia University men’s soccer team fell 3-2 in overtime at Ripon College last night. Mohamed Koroma scored both Lions goals. Finlandia will play at Wisconsin-Eau Claire this evening.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings buried the Columbus Blue Jackets 4-1 last night. Lucas Raymond scored his first NHL goal, and added an assist. Tyler Bertuzzi’s fifth goal of the season was the eventual game-winner, and Vladislav Namestnikov and Adam Erne added empty-netters. Thomas Greiss made 22 saves, as the Wings outshot the Blue Jackets 43-23.

The Wings host the Calgary Flames tomorrow. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, Wings coverage will begin at 7:15 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons open the regular season tonight at home against the Chicago Bulls. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

The Los Angeles Dodgers scored four runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to overtake the Atlanta Braves 6-5. Atlanta leads the National League Championship Series 2-1, with game four tonight in Los Angeles.

The Houston Astros blasted the Boston Red Sox 9-2. The American League Championship Series is tied 2-2, with game five in Boston this evening.

NFL

The Green Bay Packers have announced the two newest additions to the team’s Hall of Fame. Receiver Greg Jennings caught 425 passes over seven seasons in Green Bay, after having been drafted out of Western Michigan University. Linebacker Tim Harris recorded 55 sacks in five seasons with the Pack in the 1980s.

CopperDog 150

The CopperDog 150 will return to downtown Calumet for the start and finish of the race next year. The sled dog race was modified this year because of COVID-19 restrictions. It opened and ended in Eagle Harbor, with no spectators allowed. The 2022 CopperDog will be held March 4th through 6th.
