High School

In hockey last night…
• Hancock outscored Jeffers 7-1. The Bulldogs got two goals from Calvin Heinonen, and one each from Mason Mikesch, Luke Marcotte, Todd Anderson, Kyle Mikkola and Chad Nordstrom also found the net for the Bulldogs. Trevor Halonen scored for the Jets.

On tonight’s hockey schedule…
• Houghton travels to Kingsford.

In girls basketball last evening…
• Houghton edged Hancock 50-44.
• Calumet shut down Kingsford 85-24. Elli Djerf scored 38 for the Copper Kings, including eight three-pointers to set a new school record.
• Jeffers stopped Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 54-35.
• Ontonagon smothered Watersmeet 62-14.
• Ewen-Trout Creek overwhelmed Bessemer 70-24. Abbie LeGault scored 20. The Panthers remain unbeaten.

In boys play last night…
• L’Anse slipped past Wakefield-Marenisco 54-52.
• Jeffers got past Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 59-54. Davin Hill of the Blue Bolts led all scorers with 19 points, and Connor LeClaire added 18. Christian Hocking paced a balanced Jets attack with 15 points.
• Ontonagon fell to Watersmeet 72-46.
• Ewen-Trout Creek defeated Bessemer 61-45. Jaden Borseth scored 22 for the Panthers, and Tommy Cousineau added 21.

In girls action tonight…
• L’Anse hosts Wakefield-Marenisco.

On the boys schedule tonight…
• Houghton welcomes Marquette.
• Hancock journeys to West Iron County.

In girls-boys doubleheaders…
• Calumet plays at Jeffers.
• Chassell hosts Republic-Michigamme.

College Basketball

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team is ranked sixth in the final WBCA National Coaches’ Poll. The Huskies are 20-1, have tied a school record with 18 straight victories, and are seeded first in the Midwest Region of the NCAA tournament.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Albert Bibbins is a defensive back from Avoyelles High School in Moreauville, Louisiana.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings return to the ice tonight, when they host the Tampa Bay Lightning. Coverage begins at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA

Because of the all-star break, the Detroit Pistons won’t play again until they visit the Charlotte Hornets Thursday.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off. They’ll face the New York Yankees in Grapefruit League play this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will make his second start of the spring.

Detroit catcher Grayson Greiner suffered a broken nose when he was hit in the face by a pitch in Sunday’s game. He’ll be out for a week.

In Cactus League action, the Milwaukee Brewers scored four runs in the first inning, but had to come from behind to edge the Los Angeles Angels 10-9 yesterday. Starter Brandon Woodruff gave up two runs over two innings. Avisail Garcia had three hits.

The Brewers will face the San Francisco Giants this afternoon. Adrian Houser will start for the Crew. 

Outfielder Jackie Bradley, Jr., joined the Brewers at training camp yesterday, after officially signing his new two-year contract. To make room on the roster, Milwaukee placed utilityman Tim Lopes on the 60-day Injured List. He suffered a strained oblique while batting in a game last Wednesday.
