DH Sweeps for Houghton, Hancock Softball – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton shut down Westwood 10-2 and 14-0. Stella Soumis pitched the first game, striking out 10, and walking just one. Clea Ollanketo and Mackenzie Collard each went five-for-five at the plate. Romi Mattson pitched the nightcap, striking out four and walking none. Soumis had three hits and drove in three runs.
• Hancock swept their doubleheader against Norway,12-2 and 5-2. Sadie Biekkola struck out 11 over six innings to earn the win in game one. Biekkola, Sydnie Scholie, Mallory Sporalski, and Alice Larson each had two hits for Hancock and Megan Pelto hit a home run. Scholie pitched a complete game win in game two. Ella Storm and Brooke Koskela each had two hits for the Bulldogs.
• Calumet split their doubleheader against Gogebic. The Copper Kings took the first game 11-4. Lena Mhyren had three hits. Audrey Erkkila earned the complete game win, striking out three and walking two. The Miners won the nightcap 6-1.

In softball today…
• Hancock Journeys to Iron Mountain.
• Calumet plays at Marquette.

In softball tomorrow…
• Houghton competes at the Pulaski tournament.

In baseball yesterday…
• Houghton defeated Calumet 12-3 and 14-3. Bryce Pugh struck out eight, and earned the win game one. Rylan Isaacson claimed the win in game two. Joel Durocher drove in six runs in the two games.
• Jeffers routed Iron Mountain 18-2. Levi Frahm gave up just one hit, and struck out five to get the win. He also had two hits and drove in three runs. Nick Andrews had two hits and drove in two runs.

On today’s baseball schedule…
• Houghton plays at North Dickinson
• Hancock travels to Iron Mountain.
• Calumet journeys to Green Bay Southwest.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell travels to Onaway.

Tomorrow…
• Calumet plays at Gladstone.
• Hancock entertains Jeffers – canceled because of threatening weather – will not be rescheduled.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell competes at the Hillman tourney.

At the Negaunee track meet yesterday…
• The Houghton boys earned a team victory. Calumet finished third out of four teams competing. The Gremlins got event wins from the 3200-meter relay team, Brody Mattila in the long jump and the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, Luke Hill in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, Colin VanCarson in the 800-meter run, and Michael Salera in the discus throw. • In the girls meet, Houghton placed second, and Calumet third. The Gremlins earned event wins from the 3200-meter relay team, Tessa Rautiola in the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, Lily Ross in the 800-meter run, and Camryn Pertile in the pole vault. The Copper Kings got wins from the 400-meter relay team, Caitlyn Strom in the 100-yard dash, and Jackie Kiilunen in the shot put. See full results here.

Lake Linden-Hubbell swept the L’Anse Early Bird track meet yesterday…
• On the boys side, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed second, followed by Ontonagon, Jeffers, Republic-Michigamme, Hancock, Baraga and L’Anse. Matthew Jokela of the Lakes took the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. Gabe Popko claimed the 11-meter hurdles and the discus throw. Landon Larson from Jeffers won the 800-meter run and the long jump.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City also finished second in the girls meet, followed by Hancock, Baraga, Ontonagon, Ewen-Trout Creek, Jeffers, Chassell and L’Anse. The Lakes’ Emily Jokela won the 100 and 200-meter dashes and the 300-meter hurdles. Taryn Maki of the Blue Bolts took the 1600 and 3200-meter runs. Reese Holley of the Vikings claimed the shot put and the discus throw.

In opening-round NHL tournament play last evening…
• The Panthers outskated the Lightning 5-3. Florida leads that series 3-0.
• The Hurricanes shaded the Islanders 3-2. Carolina leads that set 3-0.

Tonight…
• The Rangers visit the Capitals. New York leads that series 2-0.
• The Predators welcome the Canucks. That set is tied 1-1.
• The Avalanche host the Jets. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Kings welcome the Oilers. That set is tied 1-1.

NBA

In opening-round NBA tournament play last night…
• The Magic pounded the Cavaliers 121-83. Cleveland leads that set 2-1.
• The 76ers outscored the Knicks 125-114. New York holds a 2-1 lead in that series.
• The Nuggets got past the Lakers 112-105. Denver leads that series 3-0.

Tonight…
• The Pacers entertain the Bucks. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Mavericks welcome the Clippers. That set is tied 1-1.
• The Suns host the Timberwolves. Minnesota leads that series 2-0.

MLB

The Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home series against the Royals this afternoon. Reese Olson will start against Seth Lugo. Coverage will start at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers came from behind to defeat the Pirates 7-5 yesterday. Gary Sánchez’ pinch hit two-run homer in the eighth provided the winning run. William Contreras also homered.

The Brewers host the Yankees tonight. Colin Rea will pitch against Luis Gil.

NFL

The NFL Draft opened last night. To the surprise of no one, the Bears used the top pick to take USC quarterback Caleb Williams. The Commanders followed by selecting LSU quarterback Jayden Daniels. The Vikings grabbed Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy with the 10th pick, and Alabama edge rusher Dallas Turner with the 17th. The Lions traded up to the 24th pick, and selected Alabama cornerback Terrion Arnold. They gave the Cowboys their 29th pick, and a third-round pick. The Packers used the 25th pick to take Arizona offensive lineman Jordan Morgan.

Rounds Two and Three will take place this evening, and the final four rounds will play out tomorrow.
