MLB
The Detroit Tigers won both of their games against the Minnesota Twins yesterday. In the first contest, Justin Upton’s home run in the seventh inning snapped a 1-1 tie. Each team scored a run in the eighth, and Detroit then blew the game open with six runs in the ninth to claim a 9-2 victory. Victor Martinez homered in that big ninth inning.
In the second game, Justin Verlander struck out 11 in a 4-2 win. Erick Aybar drove in the winning run in the sixth inning, then scored an insurance run on a passed ball.
The Tigers open their final home stand of the season tonight, as they entertain the Kansas City Royals. Michael Fulmer will start against Danny Duffy. Hear the first pitch at 8:10 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
The Indians also won, so any combination of four Cleveland wins or Detroit losses clinches the American League Central Division title for the Indians. Baltimore lost, and Toronto was idle, so Detroit now holds the second American League wild card playoff berth… a game behind the Blue Jays, and a half-game ahead of the Orioles.
Scooter Gennett and Chris Carter homered, and the Milwaukee Brewers got past the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-1 last night. Chase Anderson gave up a run on just four hits, as he pitched into the sixth inning.
The Brewers open their final home series of the season when they host the Cincinnati Reds tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Anthony DeSclafani.
