The girls high school basketball season opened last night…
– Defending Class C state champion Calumet got off to a quick start, and dominated Escanaba 58-26.
– Hancock defeated West Iron County 37-27.
– Houghton smothered Baraga 46-21.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Republic-Michigamme 56-20.
– Dollar Bay-Tamarack City defeated Bessemer 47-38.
– Jeffers trounced Watersmeet 69-38.
– Chassell v L’Anse – not reported.

In high school hockey last night…
– Hancock blew out Houghton 6-2.
– Jeffers doubled up Negaunee 10-5.
– L’Anse lost to Kingsford 5-2.

Michigan Tech hockey forward Tyler Heinonen has been named the WCHA Player of the Month. Heinonen scored six goals and added four assists in the Huskies’ eight games last month.

The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team has signed four new players for next season, including one who is sort of from the Upper Peninsula. Abbey Ostman is a 5-9 guard for St. Ignace, although she lives across the bridge in Mackinaw City. She was the 2015 UP Class D Player of the Year. Hannah Hobson from Stoughton, Wisconsin, is a two-time conference all-star forward. Baillie McGirk is an All-Conference guard from Rockford Lutheran High School in Illinois. Ellie Welsh is a guard from Hononegah High School in Rockton, Illinois. Find out more about the new players here.

The Huskies men’s team added one player for next season. Ryan Schuller is a 6-10 post player from Sturgis, Michigan. Find out more about him here.

Econo Foods LogoTadych’s Econo Foods will sponsor its annual Kids Day Saturday at Michigan Tech. Econo Foods has purchased 500 tickets for kids ages 14 and under. They are good for both the men’s and women’s basketball games Saturday afternoon against Walsh, and the hockey game Saturday night against Alaska-Anchorage. The tickets will be given away at the Econo Foods service counter beginning at noon today on a first-come, first-served basis. There is a limit of five per customer.

Brad Richards’ shootout goal gave the Detroit Red Wings a 5-4 win over the Buffalo Sabres last night. Detroit had a two goal lead early in the game, but trailed in the third period when Justin Abdelkader scored to force Detroit’s seventh overtime in the last eight games. The extra period was scoreless. Abdelkader had two goals and an assist. Petr Mrazek stopped 28 shots. The Wings entertain the Arizona Coyotes tomorrow night.

With seven goals and three assists in 13 games in November, Detroit’s Dylan Larkin has been named the NHL’s Rookie of the Month.

The Detroit Pistons welcome the Phoenix Suns tonight. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Detroit’s Reggie Jackson has been fined $25,000 for cursing at a fan during Friday’s loss at Oklahoma City.

Former Detroit Tiger David Price has just signed the biggest contract ever for a pitcher. The Boston Red Sox will pay Price 217-million dollars over seven seasons.
