De Marchi Named GLIAC Volleyball Player of the Year – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

The girls high school basketball tournament finals will be played today. The games begin at 10:00 with the Division Four championship between Fowler and Bellaire. The Division One match between Detroit Renaissance and Hudsonville will tip off at 12:30. The Division Three battle between Grass Lake and Kent City will start at 3:00. The Division Two tilt between Newaygo and Portland will begin at 5:30. We will broadcast the Division Four and Division Three games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com, with coverage of the Division Four match beginning around 9:50 this morning.

In boys tournament semifinals involving Upper Peninsula teams yesterday…
• In Division Three, Iron Mountain eliminated Schoolcraft 54-50 in overtime. Foster Wonders scored 34 points.
• In Division Four, Rudyard fell to Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian 61-43.

The boys finals will be played tomorrow. Wyoming Tri-Unity will face Detroit Douglass in the Division Four game at 10:00. Ann Arbor Huron plays Grand Blanc in the Division One match at 12:30. Iron Mountain plays Flint Beecher in the Division Three contest at 3:00. Grand Rapids Catholic Central meets Pennfield in the Division Two final at 5:30. We will broadcast the Division Four and Three games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

College Volleyball

Both Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan University have opening-round byes as the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference volleyball tournament opens today. The tourney is being played at Saginaw Valley State University. The top-seeded Huskies will begin play at 4:00 against the winner of this morning’s match between Saginaw Valley State and Wisconsin Parkside. The second-seeded Wildcats will open at 7:00 this evening against the winner of this afternoon’s game between Lake Superior State University and Davenport University.

Tech’s Laura De Marchi has been named the GLIAC Volleyball Player of the Year. De Marchi led the GLIAC with 589 assists. Her average per game ranked second in NCAA Division II. She set a new school career assists record, and also passed the 1,000 career digs mark. De Marchi also was named GLIAC Setter of the Year. Teammate Olivia Ghormley was named Attacker of the Year for the third straight season. They were joined on the GLIAC first team by Anna Joynas of the Huskies. Tech’s Megan Utlak and Janie Grindland were named to the second team, and Jillian Kuizenga earned honorable mention votes.

College Soccer

The MTU soccer team entertains Northwood University tonight at 7:00, and hosts Ferris State Sunday at noon.

College Baseball

The Finlandia University baseball team is at Wisconsin-Stevens Point for doubleheaders today, tomorrow and Sunday.

College Softball

The Finlandia softball team hosts Gogebic Community College for a doubleheader tomorrow. Those games were originally scheduled for Sunday, but have been moved up because of rain in the forecast. Coverage will begin at 1:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings lost 7-1 to the Nashville Predators last night. After a scoreless first period, Adam Erne gave Detroit a brief lead early in the second period. Nashville responded with seven straight tallies. Jonathan Bernier made 25 saves and took the loss for Detroit in his first game back after missing several weeks with a lower body injury.

The Wings visit the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow evening. 

NBA

The Detroit Pistons downed the Sacramento Kings 113-101 last night. With Jerami Grant and Mason Plumlee on the bench, Cory Joseph scored 24 points against his former team, and Isaiah Stewart grabbed 13 rebounds.

The Pistons visit the Portland Trailblazers tomorrow night.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and visit the Cleveland Indians tonight. Julio Teheran will pitch against Zach Plesac. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Pitching coach Chris Fetter will rejoin the team for tonight’s game, after missing time with COVID-19.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 3-1 to the Saint Louis Cardinals yesterday. Corbin Burnes threw six shutout innings, allowing just one hit, and striking out nine. He left with a 1-0 lead, but Saint Louis tied it off Eric Yardley in the seventh, and scored the winning runs off Drew Rasmussen in the eighth.

The Brewers have today off, and play at Saint Louis again tomorrow. Adrian Houser will start against Carlos Martinez.
