DB-TC Boys, Ontonagon Girls Win CMC Track Titles – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school softball yesterday…
• Houghton v Ishpeming – no report.
• Hancock v Baraga – no report.

On the softball schedule today…
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Baraga.

On the baseball schedule today…
• Houghton travels to Negaunee.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at L’Anse.

Weather forced an early stop to the Copper Mountain Conference track meet yesterday at Lake Linden. The 3200-meter runs and the 4×400 meter relays had to be abandoned, because of a thunderstorm threat.
• Ontonagon won the girls title, with Lake Linden-Hubbell second. Baraga, Chassell and Ewen-Trout Creek rounded out the top five. Nicole Lukkari from the Gladiators won both hurdles events. Kyra Sipe from L’Anse won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. See full girls results here.
• Dollar Bay-Tamarack City claimed the boys title. Lake Linden-Hubbell was second, with Bessemer, Ewen-Trout Creek and Baraga completing the top five. Connor LeClaire led the Blue Bolts with victories in both hurdles events. Isaac Lawrence from Republic-Michigamme won the 100 and 200-meter dashes, and the long jump. Ewen-Trout Creek’s Jonah Nordine claimed the 800 and 1600-meter runs. See full boys results here.
• Conference honors were announced after the meet. Sipe was named the girls Most Valuable Player, and Johnny Norland of the Blue Bolts earned the boys MVP award. See the full list of awards here.

Houghton, Hancock and Calumet compete at the WestPAC track meet at Gwinn today.

At the George Young girls golf invitational at Iron River yesterday, Westwood took the team title, with Houghton second, and Ontonagon third. Baraga’s Rylie Koskinen earned individual honors.

The Copper Mountain Conference golf meet will take place today in Watersmeet.

The Houghton, Hancock and Calumet boys golf teams will compete on the Calumet course today.

Softball

The Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League begins play tonight.
• At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, A&S Industrial/Lokus Tech plays Downtowner Two at 6:30, and then faces Pat’s Foods/Buckos at 7:30.
• At the Hancock Driving Park, McGann’s/Northern Auto meets Auto Pro/Thermoanalytics at 6:30, and then plays Koppers at 7:30.

Horseshoes

The first week of Copper Country Horseshoe League play wrapped up last night, as Dreamland One defeated Calumet Electronics 8-1.

NBA

In the NBA tournament yesterday…
• The Nets routed the Celtics 130-108. Brooklyn leads that opening-round series 2-0.
• The Lakers got past the Suns 109-102. That series is tied 1-1.
• The Mavericks outscored the Clippers 127-121. Dallas leads that set 2-0.

On tonight’s schedule…
• The 76ers welcome the Wizards. Philly leads that series 1-0.
• The Knicks host the Hawks. Atlanta has a 1-0 lead in that set.
• The Jazz entertain the Grizzlies. Memphis leads that series 1-0.

NHL

In the NHL playoffs yesterday…
• The Maple Leafs blanked the Canadiens 4-0. Toronto leads that opening-round series 3-1.
• The Hurricanes edged the Predators 3-2 in overtime. Carolina leads that set 3-2.

Tonight…
• The Islanders host the Penguins. New York leads that series 3-2.
• The Lightning welcome the Panthers. Tampa Bay leads that set 3-2.
• The Wild entertain the Golden Knights. Vegas is up 3-2 in that series.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 4-1 to the Cleveland Indians last night. Tarik Skubal went five innings, allowing two runs and striking out nine. He took the loss. Detroit’s only run came on a Jonathan Schoop RBI single in the bottom of the ninth. After that, the Tigers were able to load the bases with one out, but Willi Castro struck out, and Eric Haase flied out to end the game.

The Tigers host the Indians again tonight. José Ureña will start against Triston McKenzie. Coverage begins at 6:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers got just two hits in a 7-1 loss to the San Diego Padres last evening. Corbin Burnes struggled, giving up four runs over six innings. The Padres only got five hits in the game, but were able to steal six bases. Travis Shaw’s homer in the bottom of the seventh produced the Crew’s only run.

The Brewers entertain the Padres again tonight. Eric Lauer will pitch against Chris Paddack.

The Milwaukee front office was busy yesterday. The Brewers traded outfielder Billy McKinney to the New York Mets. McKinney had recently been designated for assignment. The Mets gave up 17-year-old pitcher Pedro Quintana. Pitcher Eric Yardley has been activated from the injured list. Outfielder Tyrone Taylor was sent down to Nashville to make room. And, the Brewers claimed journeyman infielder Jake Hager off waivers from the Mets, and assigned him to Nashville.
