High School
In high school hockey, Danny Hill’s goal in overtime lifted Hancock to a 3-2 victory over Calumet in the second game of the Copper Island Classic Saturday night. The Bulldogs took an early lead on goals by Teddy Randell and Devyn Lacourt. The Copper Kings came back, and tied it with 3:20 remaining in regulation. On Friday, Jake Anderson’s power play goal in overtime gave Calumet to a 3-2 victory over Hancock in the first game of the series. The championship of the total-goals Classic remains undecided. MHSAA rules prohibit the teams from playing an extra period after a specific game which has already been resolved. Because the squads are even at five goals each, the goals from their matchup in the MacInnes Holiday Classic in December will be used to determine the winner.

The 19th-ranked Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep at Alaska-Fairbanks with a 3-1 victory Saturday night. Brent Baltus, Tyler Heinonen and Alex Petan scored for the Huskies. Jamie Phillips made 27 saves for the win. Tech skated past Alaska-Fairbanks 4-1 Friday night. See video highlights from Saturday’s game here.

The 16th-ranked Tech women’s basketball team lost at Minnesota State 77-73 Saturday afternoon. The Huskies started strong, and led by 12 at halftime. They went cold after the break, though, and scored just a dozen points in the third quarter. The game was tight until the Mavericks took the lead with a three-point shot with 1:06 remaining. MSU hit some critical free throws in the final minute to seal the win. Danielle Blake led the Huskies with 16 points and 13 rebounds. Kelli Guy also scored 16 for Tech.

At the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, the Michigan Tech men’s team fell to the host Panthers 69-51. The game was decided early, as the Huskies were outscored 25-15 in the first half. Kyle Monroe scored a career-best 26 points for Tech. MTU opened the Classic with an 85-71 victory over Southern Wesleyan Friday afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University men’s basketball team also played at the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic, where they trounced Southern Wesleyan 80-52 Saturday. The Wildcats lost to the host squad 72-63 Friday.

The NMU women’s team has this weekend off.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team came from two goals down to tie 15th-ranked Bowling Green in the third period Saturday, but lost to the Falcons 4-3 in overtime. The Wildcats lost to BGU 2-1 Friday night.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings will host the Carolina Panthers this afternoon. Tomas Jurco has been recalled from his conditioning assignment at Grand Rapids.

MLB
Outfielder Mike Hessman is retiring from baseball. Hessman’s home run for the Toledo Mud Hens against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs on August 3rd was his 433rd in the Minor Leagues, and gave him the all-time record. He spent 19 seasons in professional baseball, but appeared in just 109 Major League games, for the Braves, Tigers and Mets.

Our girls high school basketball coverage begins Tuesday night, when the defending state champion Calumet Copper Kings host Escanaba. Our pregame show begins around 7:00 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
