The Kansas City Royals scored early and often, and routed the Detroit Tigers 16-5 last night. Detroit enjoyed a brief lead, after scoring twice in the top of the first inning. It didn’t last. The Royals scored four runs in the second off Matt Boyd, added three more in the fourth as Boyd gave way to Anibal Sanchez… then added one in the sixth off Sanchez, three in the seventh off Alex Wilson, and five in the eighth off Mark Lowe and utility player Andrew Romine, who got the final two outs. Justin Upton homered for Detroit.
The Tigers conclude that series in Kansas City this afternoon. Jordan Zimmermann will pitch against Chris Young. Hear the first pitch at 2:15 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
After the game, the Tigers optioned Boyd and reliever Blaine Hardy to Toledo. Before the game, Detroit purchased the contract of infielder Casey McGehee from the Mud Hens. He filled the roster spot opened when pitcher Buck Farmer was sent down on Friday.
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 10-6 yesterday. The Crew build a 5-2 lead after the top of the third inning. That was erased when L-A pounded out six runs in the bottom of the third, chasing starter Chase Anderson from the game. Anderson was charged with seven runs. Ryan Braun hit a late homer for Milwaukee.
The Brewers wrap up that set against the Dodgers at Los Angeles this afternoon. Matt Garza will pitch against Kenta Maeda.
NBA
The NBA championship will be decided tonight. The Cleveland Cavaliers and Golden State Warriors are tied at three wins per team.
NHL
As many had expected, Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk will forgo the final year of his contract, and leave the team to play in Russia next season. At a press conference, Datsyuk said the decision was difficult, and motivated by family – he has a 13-year-old daughter in his home country he’s been able to see for only a couple of month each year. Datsyuk has been offered a contract to play with the St. Petersburg team in the Kontinental league there. The $7.5-million dollar value of the remaining year on his contract will still count against Detroit’s salary cap next season. There is an outside chance that the cap load could be traded to another team that needs to reach the NHL minimum salary obligation, but general manager Ken Holland said that such a team would also want young players as part of the deal, and he’s reluctant to part with any of Detroit’s prospects.
