Daavettila Passes 1,000 in Finlandia Hoops Win – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school boys basketball last night, Houghton defeated Gwinn 63-50. Brad Sirard and George Butvilas each scored 25 for the Gremlins.

– Calumet journeys to West Iron County.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Jeffers.
– L’Anse visits Chassell.

The Houghton swim team hosts Kingsford today.

The Calumet JV hockey team is holding a pancake breakfast fundraiser Saturday from 7:30 until noon in the Calumet Colosseum Ballroom. Tickets are $6.00, and can be purchased from players, or at the door.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s basketball team hung on to defeat the College of St. Scholastica 84-80 last night. The Lions led by 18 midway through the third quarter, then held off a late comeback by the Saints. Dollar Bay’s Julia Daavettila led Finlandia with had 25 points and 11 rebounds, and passed the 1,000 career point mark. Houghton’s Kelsie Richards added 16 points and 11 rebounds.

The Finlandia men’s team dropped an 87-58 decision to St. Scholastica. Myles Ellington paced the Lions with 14 points.

MTU
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams play at Ferris State tonight. After falling to top-ranked Ashland last week, and defeating Tiffin, the women’s team is ranked 16th in the nation this week.

NMU
Both Northern Michigan University basketball teams tip off at Lake Superior State this evening.

NBA
Andre Drummond powered the Detroit Pistons to a 114-80 win over the Brooklyn Nets last night. Still recovering from bruised ribs, Drummond scored 22 points and grabbed 20 rebounds. Detroit led by as much as 40 points before both coaches turned the game over to the reserves. Tobias Harris also scored 22 for Detroit. The Pistons visit the Chicago Bulls Saturday evening.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings return to action Saturday, when they play at Pittsburgh. Pregame will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

Defenseman Mike Green will be Detroit’s only representative in the NHL All Star Game, which will be played January 28th.

NFL
The new Cleveland Browns administration is starting to look like the old Packers organization. Cleveland’s new general manager is John Dorsey, a former Green Bay linebacker who went on to work in the front office. Yesterday, the Browns added former Packers execs Eliot Wolf and Alonzo Highsmith. Wolf is the son of former Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf. He recently interviewed for the Packers’ vacant GM job, which went to Brian Gutekunst.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers have added a couple of relievers to their staff. They finalized a one-year deal with former Cleveland lefty Boone Logan, after he passed a physical. Logan missed much of last season with an injury. The Crew also signed former Diamondbacks and Reds righthander J.J. Hoover to a minor-league deal. To make room on teh roster, they released pitcher Taylor Jungmann.
