Morning Sports for Thursday, May 29th:
MLB: Tigers Fall in Ninth
The Tigers finally got a good outing by a starting pitcher Wednesday night… but wound up losing to the Athletics 3-1. Anibal Sanchez pitched shutout ball into the ninth inning. He left the game with one out, after giving up a double to Coco Crisp. Closer Joe Nathan gave up a ground ball single to John Jaso that just got past third baseman Nick Castellanos… and then Josh Donaldson hit a three-run homer ended the game with a three-run homer. Detroit’s only run came on a home run by Torii Hunter.
The Tigers have lost eight of their last 10 games… and wrap up that series at Oakland this afternoon. Rick Porcello will face Jesse Chavez. Hear the first pitch at 3:35 on AM 1400, WCCY.
Brewers
After sinking the Orioles with his bat the night before, Yovani Gallardo pitched the Brewers past Baltimore 8-3 Wednesday night. Gallardo pitched into the seventh, and left with a one-run lead. Khris Davis homered as Milwaukee added four insurance runs in the eighth inning.
The Brewers have today off, and open a home set against the Cubs tomorrow evening. Marco Estrada will start against Travis Wood.
Copper Country Slowpitch Softball
In Copper Country Slowpitch Softball action last night…
– At Miller Memorial Field in Laurium, Erickson Crowley Peterson pounded Bucko’s/Labatts 29-10. Matt Turunen hit two homers for Erickson, and Tim Loftquist had one. Pat’s Foods/ThermoAnalytics scored 18 runs in the eighth inning, and beat Osmose 43-27. Jason Carne homered twice for Pat’s, and Logan Rastello and Jim Larsen each hit one out.
– At Hurontown, the score for the games between 906/Pilgrim Steakhouse and Nutini’s… and 906 and Coca Cola/Miller’s Recreation… were not reported.
– At the Hancock Driving Park, North Pointe Trucking outscored Goal Post 29-13. Jeff Aho had six hits for North Pointe. Goal Post then fell to McGann’s/Northern Auto 32-12. Josh Frantti and Brian Juoperi each homered for McGann’s.

In Twilight League baseball tonight…
– At the Hancock Driving Park, Pat’s Foods entertains BlueSky Health.
– At the Toivola Field, Mosquito Inn hosts the Stanton Wildcats.

Houghton Golf Teams Take U.P. Titles
Both the Houghton boys’ and girls’ golf teams won Upper Peninsula titles yesterday. At the Wawanowin course near Ishpeming, the girls won their fourth-straight crown. Megan Kelly was the top Gremlin… finishing third overall. Addison Cook placed sixth individually… Noelle Polakowski seventh… Taryn Kaurala ninth… and Lindsey Sandell 11th. Calumet finished fifth. Valerie Darnell placed 14th overall for the Copper Kings. The full results are here.
At the Marquette Country Club Heritage Course, the Gremlin boys edged Escanaba to take the crown. Houghton’s Wyatt Liston was the top individual finisher. Gunnar Stein and Ben Strong tied for fourth. Calumet finished seventh overall. Damon Kangas was the top Copper King individually, placing 17th. The full results are here.
Daavettila to Play Hoops at Finlandia
One of the best basketball players in Dollar Bay High School history will play college ball at Finlandia University. Julia Daavettila led the Bays to their first outright Copper Country Conference title since 1979, and their first District title since 1983. In her senior season, she averaged 17.1 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4 steals, and 3.1 assists per game. She was named to the Copper Country All-Conference First Team, and was also voted Most Valuable Player. She was also voted to the All-UP Class D Second Team.
Jerebko Returning to Pistons
Jonas Jerebko has told a newspaper in his native Sweden that he’ll stay with the Pistons for another season. Jerebko’s contract gives him the option of accepting a 4.5-million dollar salary, or becoming a free agent.
Vikes Family Fun Walk/Run Tonight
The Vikes Family Fun Walk/Run will be held at the Baraga Area Schools track tonight. Registration will begin at 6:00 p.m. with stretching at 6:30 p.m. and the event beginning at 7:00 p.m. The run is about healthy living and eating right, and is also a fundraiser for B.E.S.T., the Baraga Area Schools Parent-Teacher organization.
