Crush Surprises at Fast Pitch Tourney – Sunday Sports Wrap

MLB

Tyler Alexander struggled, as the Detroit Tigers suffered an 8-1 loss to the Seattle Mariners yesterday. After sailing through three scoreless innings, Alexander gave up three runs in the fourth, and left as the M’s scored another in the fifth. Seattle plated four more runs against Nick Ramirez in the seventh. Detroit’s only run came in the third inning, after JaCoby Jones doubled, and was singled home by Nico Goodrum.

The Tigers conclude that series in Seattle this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will pitch against Matt Wisler. Pregame coverage will start at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Keston Hiura’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning powered the Milwaukee Brewers to a 5-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs yesterday. The blow capped a dramatic ending to a game that was tied 2-2 at the end of nine. The Cubs surged ahead in the top of the 10th, when Albert Almora Jr. homered off Freddy Peralta. Christian Yelich’s solo shot in the bottom of the 10th re-tied the game, setting the stage for Hiura’s game-winner. Ben Gamel also homered for the Crew.

The win moved Milwaukee into a virtual tie with the Cubs for second place in the National League Central Division. Both teams trail the Saint Louis Cardinals by one game. That series wraps up in Milwaukee this afternoon. Zach Davies will start against José Quintana.

Fast Pitch Softball

After winning just two games during the regular season, Crush-Diamond House International-Baby E’s Bar-B-Cue stunned the Copper Country Women’s Fast Pitch Softball League yesterday by winning the post-season tournament, and claiming the Holly McCullah trophy.

Crush began the day by upsetting defending champion and top-seed Superior National Bank 2-1. SNB scored in the first inning, but was shut down the rest of the way by Sarah Audette. Crush was blanked until the seventh inning, when they scored twice on a pair of singles and a throwing error.

The other semifinal also featured an upset, as third-seed Northern Michigan Land Brokers outscored second-seed Coca Cola of Hancock 7-4. After playing to a 4-4 tie through the regulation seven frames, NMLB scored three times in the top of the eighth. Molly Bugni’s two-run double was the big blow. Mel Baker earned the win in relief of Carolyn Parker. Delaney Heinonen took the loss, striking out 12, but also giving up ten walks. Grace Brunet homered for Coca Cola.

Crush built an early 7-1 lead in the championship match, only to see NMLB score three runs in the fifth inning, and three more in the sixth, to tie the game. Ryeleigh Johnson singled home Kierstyn Codere with the winning run in the top of the seventh. Audette earned the win in relief, striking out three over the final two innings.

NFL

The Detroit Lions have cut running back Theo Riddick. Riddick was a sixth-round draft pick out of Notre Dame in 2013. In 2015, he caught 80 passes to set a team record for receptions by a back. His production had dropped over the past several seasons, in part because of a series of injuries. The cut opens the roster position and salary cap space Detroit needed to add former Green Bay defensive tackle Mike Daniels, who was signed after having been released by the Packers last week.
