Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team fought to a 2-2 tie with Maranatha Baptist yesterday afternoon. Alexia Gonzales and Kirsten L’Esperance scored for the Lions. The Lions outshot the Sabercats 10-1 in the two overtime periods, but couldn’t break the stalemate.

L’Esperance has been named the American Collegiate Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week for women’s soccer. It’s the third time this season that she has won the award.

The Finlandia men’s soccer game at Maranatha Baptist was called off after eight minutes because of a thunderstorm. It is tentatively scheduled to be made up on October 25th.

MTU
After having been picked to finish fourth in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the MTU hockey team has debuted at 18th in the nation in the first USCHO.com poll of the season. Northern Michigan placed 20th in the poll. Minnesota-Duluth was first.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers scored four runs in the eighth inning, and defeated the Minnesota Twins 4-2 last night. Spencer Turnbull gave up a run over six innings to earn the win. Trailing 1-0 in the top of the eighth, Nicholas Castellanos and Niko Goodrum singled home runs, and James McCann drove in two with a double. The Twins rallied in the bottom of the eighth, scoring once off Joe Jiménez, but Alex Wilson came in with the bases loaded, and got a fly ball out to end the inning.

The Tigers continue that series at Minnesota tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Jake Odorizzi. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers got another big win last night, defeating the Saint Louis Cardinals 12-4. Christian Yelich drove in six runs, Ryan Braun homered twice, and Jesús Aguilar went deep once.

The Cubs lost yesterday, so Milwaukee now trails Chicago by just a half-game in the National League Central Division. The Cardinals’ loss last night dropped them behind the Rockies in the wild card race. Milwaukee leads Colorado by three-and-a-half games. The Brewers would clinch a wild card playoff berth with a win at Saint Louis tonight. Jhoulys Chacín will pitch against John Gant.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings remained unbeaten in the preseason with an 8-6 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks last night. Andreas Athanasiou had two goals and two assists for Detroit. Thomas Vanek had two goals and one assist. Jimmy Howard made 30 saves.

The Wings skate at Boston tonight. Listen for regular-season Red Wings games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
Green Bay Packers cornerback Davon House will undergo shoulder surgery, and miss the rest of the season. The injury dates back to last year, and was aggravated earlier this fall. Free agent Bashaud Breeland has been signed to fill in. He played the last four seasons with Washington.

Skating
The L’Anse-Baraga Figure Skating Club will hold registration this afternoon between 3:30 and 6:00 at Meadowbrook Arena.

Our high school football coverage will continue with two games on Friday. Calumet will try to clinch a playoff berth at Iron Mountain on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Hancock plays at Westwood on 99.3 The Lift and TheLift.com.
