High School
In the high school volleyball tournament last night…
– In Class C… Calumet won the district title with a 3-0 (25-16, 25-17, 25-22) victory over Hancock.  The Copper Kings will face Manistique in the regional semifinal Tuesday night at Gladstone.

Tonight…
– In Class B… Houghton and Kingsford play for the district title at 7:00 at Houghton.
– In Class D… Lake Linden-Hubbell will face Ontonagon for the district title at 7:00 in Ontonagon.

In the high school football tournament, Calumet travels to Boyne City for the district championship game tomorrow. Our pregame coverage will begin around 12:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.

– Iron Mountain at Ishpeming – tonight.

Michigan Tech senior forward Lexi Herrewig has been named to the All-GLIAC soccer first team. No other Huskies were placed on the first or second teams, but sophomore Kat Farkas received honorable mention votes.

The Tech hockey team skates at Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

The 20th-ranked Huskies’ football team plays at fifth-ranked Ashland tomorrow.

The MTU volleyball team plays at Saginaw Valley State tonight, and Wayne State tomorrow afternoon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skates at Alaska-Anchorage tonight and tomorrow night.

The NMU football team entertains third-ranked Ferris State tomorrow.

Finlandia
Finlandia Lions New LogoThe Finlandia University women’s hockey team hosts Wisconsin-Superior tonight at 7:15 and tomorrow at 2:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team welcomes Aurora University tomorrow evening at 7:00, and Sunday at 2:15.

The football team is off this weekend.

The Lions women’s soccer team is at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, Georgia, for the Great South Athletic Conference tournament. The Lions open against the host Scotties this morning at 10:00.

The GSAC volleyball tournament is also being played in Decatur. Finlandia faces Wesleyan College in the quarterfinals this afternoon at 1:00.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings skate at Toronto tonight. Faceoff is at 7:00 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

The Wings may be without Kyle Quincey for a while. He’s recovered from a recent concussion, but a lingering ankle issue could require surgery.

GLHL
Pioneers-Wolverines FeatureThe Portage Lake Pioneers open their Great Lakes Hockey League schedule at home tonight against the Eagle River Falcons. Faceoff is at 7:30 at Dee Stadium. The Pioneers visit the Marquette Iron Rangers for games tomorrow night and Sunday afternoon.

The Calumet Wolverines begin their season at Marquette tonight, then have the rest of the weekend off.

The Detroit Pistons play at Phoenix tonight.

In last night’s NFL game, the Cincinnati Bengals remained unbeaten with a 31-10 victory over the Cleveland Browns.

The Green Bay Packers visit the Carolina Panthers in a 1:00 game on Sunday. The Detroit Lions have this week off.

The search is underway for new leadership for the Detroit Lions. Team president Tom Lewand and general manager Martin Mayhew were fired yesterday after a 1-7 start. Lions’ owner Martha Ford said that Director of Pro Personnel Sheldon White will fill in as general manager while a search for new leadership is undertaken. Head coach Jim Caldwell will remain in place through the end of the season.

MLB
Catcher James McCann has been named the Detroit Tigers’ Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sport Broadcasters Association. Meanwhile, shortstop prospect JaCoby Jones will be sidelined for 50 games, after failing his second drug test. The suspension includes the final 12 games of the Arizona Fall League, and 38 games next season.
