Copper Kings, Lakes Roll in Football Playoffs – Sunday Sports Wrap

Calumet and Lake Linden-Hubbell both advanced to the district finals of the high school football tournament with impressive wins on Saturday.

Calumet Athletics LogoThe Copper Kings took advantage of two Boyne City turnovers and good field position, and routed the Ramblers 42-8. Rory Anderson rushed for two touchdowns, and returned an interception more than 50 yards for a third. Russ Bjorn completed a 27-yard touchdown pass to Daylen Anderson, and a 24-yard strike to Victor Avillaneda. Grant Johnson scored on a 37-yard run. Boyne City spoiled the shutout when Tarin Bell scored from three yards out with less than two minutes remaining. Lake Linden Hubbell LogoBrendan Middleton scored four touchdowns as the Lakes raced past North Dickinson 46-14. Middleton’s scoring runs included two 40-yarders, one from 35 yards, and one from four yards out. Lincoln Klein scored on a 25 yard pass from Carter Crouch. Aaron Hainault returned a kickoff 32 yards for a score. North Dickinson mounted a scoring drive near the end of the first half, which ended with a touchdown pass from quarterback Garrett O’Neil to Matthew Bruette. The first round of the Michigan high school football playoffs is complete…
– In Division Four, Escanaba eliminated Whitehall 48-27 Saturday afternoon. The Eskymos will face Alma in the District final at Alma.
– In Division Five, Menominee trounced Kalkaska 41-13 Friday night. The Maroons will host Grayling in the District final. The play the winner of today’s game between Grayling and Kingsford next week in the district final. The Vikings outsted Kingsford 27-17 on Saturday.
MHSAA– In Division Six, Negaunee defeated Charlevoix 28-7 Friday night. The Miners will host Calumet Friday night. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– In Division Seven, Iron Mountain advanced with a 46-32 victory over Gwinn on Friday. The Mountaineers will travel to Traverse City to face St. Francis, after the Gladiators dispatched Harbor Springs 55-7 Saturday.
– In Division Eight, Norway edged West Iron County 15-14 on Friday. The Knights will play at Lake Linden-Hubbell Saturday. Hear the broadcast on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com. Also on Friday, St. Ignace routed Hillman 55-20, and Newberry edged Gaylord St. Mary 16-14. The Saints and the Indians will meet for that district title next week.
– In eight-man play, North Central started its state title defense with a 64-0 shutout over Rapid River. Forest Park ousted Stephenson 60-22. The Jets and Trojans will meet in the regionals at Powerws. Engadine eliminated Cedarville 38-30 in overtime. Pickford blanked Fife Lake Forest Area 53-0. Engadine and Pickford will play in the regionals at Engadine.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team completed a weekend sweep of their home-and-home series against Northern Michigan with a 5-1 victory Saturday night in Marquette. Dylan Steman opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal. Tyler Heinonen and Brent Baltus added power play goals as the Huskies built a 3-0 lead in the first period. Tech added two more scores in the second period – Mitch Reinke on a power play, and Michael Neville shorthanded. NMU’s only goal game early in the third period on a power play. Angus Redmond made 29 saves to earn his second straight win in net.

The MTU football team stunned ninth-ranked Ashland 24-21 Saturday afternoon. The Huskies led 10-7 at halftime, and still led 10-7 after a scoreless third quarter. Both offenses found their rhythms in the fourth quarter. Ashland took the lead with a 33-yard touchdown pass with 12:53 remaining. Tech went four-and-out on its next possession, but the Eagles fumbled the ensuing punt. The Huskies recovered it at the 33 yard line. On a 4th-and-10 play, Brandon Cowie connected with Ian Fischer for a 21-yard scoring strike. Ashland responded with a 91-yard touchdown drive to reclaim the lead at 21-17. With 3:11 remaining, MTU drove 75 yards for the winning score. Cowie completed the drive with an eight-yard pass to David Walter.

The MTU women’s tennis team lost 5-1 to Wayne State in the consolation bracket of the GLIAC tournament in Midland Saturday. The Huskies will meet Hillsdale in the seventh-place match this morning.

The Huskies volleyball team earned a big 3-1 (25-19, 15-25, 25-21, 25-22) victory at Grand Valley State Saturday afternoon. The win moved Tech into a third-place tie in the GLIAC.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team lost to Hillsdale 41-38 Saturday.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team suffered a 10-3 loss at Wisconsin-Superior Saturday night. The Yellowjackets built a 4-2 lead through the first two periods, and then exploded for six goals in the third stanza to put the game away.

The Finlandia women’s hockey squad lost 8-3 to Wisconsin-Eau Claire Saturday. The Lions were outshot 55-12.

 

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ six-game winning streak ended with a 1-0 loss to the Boston Bruins Saturday night. Jimmy Howard made 35 saves, but gave up a goal to Tim Schaller late in the second period, and took the loss. The Wings host the Florida Panthers this afternoon at 5:00. NBA
The Pistons will host the Milwaukee Bucks tonight.

MLB
The Cleveland Indians defeated the Chicago Cubs 7-2 Saturday night, and now lead the World Series three games to one. The Indians could wrap up the Fall Classic with a victory tonight at Wrigley Field.

Detroit Lions Logo FeatureThe Detroit Lions visit the Houston Texans for a 1:00 game today. Injured running backs Theo Riddick and Dwayne Washington are expected to play.
