High School
The Calumet High School volleyball team fell to two-time defending state champion Bronson 3-0 (25-16, 25-12, 25-13) in the state tournament semifinals yesterday. Leah Bjorn had 11 kills and 13 digs for the Copper Kings, as they closed their season for the second straight year with a loss to the Vikings in the semis. Bronson will face Laingsburg for the state title today.
In high school football, West Iron County’s quest for a Division Eight state title ended with a 17-14 loss to Saginaw Nouvel in the semifinals last night. Escanaba faces Grand Rapids Catholic Central today at Traverse City in the Division Four semifinals. Forest Park will play Portland St. Patrick for the Division Two eight-player title today at 2:00 at the Superior Dome.
Jeffers opened its high school hockey the season with a 4-2 win over Cheboygan. Jake Marcotte scored twice, Matt Halonen added a goal and an assist, and Noah Nettell earned the win in goal with 22 saves.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s hockey team dropped a 6-1 decision at Wisconsin-River Falls last night. The Falcons scored four goals in the third period to break the game open. The Lions’ only score came when Alex Rezansoff found the net in the third period. Marcus Gloss took the loss in net. Finlandia skates at Wisconsin-Superior tonight.
The Finlandia women’s hockey team lost 14-0 at 13th-ranked Lake Forest College last night. Those teams skate again this afternoon in Lake Forest.
The Finlandia women’s basketball team opened the Hope College Tip-off Tournament in Holland, Michigan, with a lopsided 78-31 loss to Rose Hulman last evening. Julia Nordstrom led the Lions with seven points. Kelsie Richards had six points and eight rebounds. Finlandia will face Heidelberg University in the consolation match this afternoon.

MTU/NMU
The Michigan Tech women’s basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with a 68-52 victory over Minnesota-Crookston last night. The Huskies took control early, and were never challenged. Lindsay Winter scored 18 points, and Elizabeth Kelliher grabbed seven rebounds. NMU’s women’s team plays at Crookston today.
The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team opened the Microtel Classic in Moorhead, Minnesota, with a 65-52 loss to 15th-ranked Southwest Minnesota State last night. The Huskies led by four at halftime, but were held to just 15 points in the second half. Bryan Heath led Tech with 13 points. The Huskies face Minnesota-Moorhead today. The Northern Michigan University men’s team is also at that event, and dropped an 84-69 decision to Minnesota-Moorhead last night. The Wildcats will face Southwest Minnesota State today.
The Michigan Tech volleyball team faces Northern Michigan University in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference tournament today. The match will start at 5:30 at Ferris State University in Big Rapids. Wayne State and Ferris State play in the other semifinal.
The MTU hockey team skated to a 1-1 tie at Alaska-Anchorage last night. The Seawolves earned the extra Western Collegiate Hockey Association standings point by winning the shootout. Thomas Beretta’s goal early in the first period was Tech’s only score. Patrick Munson stopped 13 of 14 shots, and took the loss in goal. Those teams skate in Anchorage again tonight.
The 20th-ranked NMU hockey squad defeated Alaska-Fairbanks 5-3 last night. Robbie Payne had a hat trick for the Wildcats, who skate in Fairbanks again tonight.
NHL
Late goals by Tomas Tatar and Dylan Larkin lifted the Detroit Red Wings to a 3-1 win over the Buffalo Sabres last night. Luke Glendening also scored, and Justin Abdelkader had two assists. Jimmy Howard earned the win in net, stopping 19 shots. The Wings host the Colorado Avalanche tomorrow evening. NBA
The Detroit Pistons couldn’t hold a 22-point lead, and lost to the Indiana Pacers 107-100 last night. Avery Bradley scored 16 points for Detroit, and Andre Drummond collected 15 rebounds. The Pistons have lost two straight games for the first time this season, and play the Timberwolves at Minnesota tomorrow night.
NFL
Tomorrow, the Detroit Lions visit the Chicago Bears, and the Green Bay Packers host the Baltimore Ravens. Both games kick off at 1:00. Listen to the Lions on 99.3 The Lift.
