Copper Kings Clinch Playoff Berth – Saturday Sports Wrap

In high school football last night…
– Calumet clinched a playoff berth and remained unbeaten with a 24-0 win over Iron Mountain. Travis Ojala ran for two touchdowns. The Copper Kings also scored on a fake field goal attempt with one second remaining in the first half. The snap was high, but holder Scott Loukus was able to reach up, grab the ball, scramble, and complete a scoring pass to Brandon Antilla. See the play and other game highlights here.
– Hancock managed only three first downs in a 46-0 loss at Westwood. See game highlights here.
– Houghton routed the Gogebic Miners 36-0. Xander Zapolnik ran for two touchdowns, and George Butvilas completed a pair of scoring passes to Jack Ashburn.
– L’Anse lost at Negaunee 40-6. Devan Funke ran for the Purple Hornets’ only touchdown. See game highlights here.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell fell at West Iron County 26-6. The Lakes’ only score came on a short run by Kellen Klein.

In football today, Ontonagon plays at Carney-Nadeau.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball split two close matches at the Maranatha Baptist triangular yesterday. The Lions fell to the host Sabercats 3-0 (21-25, 21-25, 23-25). They defeated Northland College 3-2 (21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 23-25, 15-9). Finlandia will play Mount Mary University in Milwaukee this afternoon.

The Finlandia football team will open its MIAA schedule at Olivet College this afternoon.

MTU
The Michigan Tech volleyball team dropped the first two sets, then swept the final three to earn a 3-2 (19-25, 23-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-7) comeback victory at Wayne State last night. Olivia Ghormley had 26 kills, and Megan Utlak recorded 23 digs. The Huskies play at Ashland University this afternoon.

The Tech football team will host Saginaw Valley State today at 1:00 at Sherman Field.

The MTU soccer team will play a non-conference match at Northern Michigan University tomorrow.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team travels to Davenport University this afternoon.

MLB
Ryan Braun hit two home runs, and Christian Yelich also homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers edged the Detroit Tigers 6-5 last night. The Tigers did their best to play spoiler, when Dawel Lugo hit his first major league home run to tie the score in the top of the eighth. Braun’s second blast of the night in the bottom of the eighth bounced off Nicholas Castellanos’ glove, fell over the wall, and was the game-winner. Those teams play again tonight in Milwaukee. Daniel Norris will start against Wade Miley.

The Cubs beat the Cardinals 8-4, and still lead Milwaukee by a game in the National League Central Division. Each team has two games remaining.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings suffered their first loss of the NHL preseason last night, falling 6-2 to the Maple Leafs at Toronto. Three of the Leafs’ goals came on power plays, and one was short-handed. Gustav Nyquist and Dylan Larkin scored for Detroit. Jimmy Howard gave up five goals over the first two periods. Harri Säteri replaced him in the third period. NFL
The Green Bay Packers host the Buffalo Bills in a 1:00 game tomorrow. The Detroit Lions visit the Dallas Cowboys in a 1:00 game. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
