Copper Island Classic Opens Tonight – Friday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school hockey, Hancock and Calumet face off tonight and tomorrow at the total-goals Copper Island Classic. Both games will be played at the Colosseum. 

The Kiwanis girls 19U hockey team will be holding a can drive tomorrow and Sunday. Bring your deer camp empties to Louie’s in Lake Linden, Pat’s Foods in Calumet or Econo Foods in Houghton. Trailers or trucks will be available at each location. 

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team skates at Alaska tonight and tomorrow night.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team plays at Alabama-Huntsville tonight and tomorrow night.

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference

Both the MTU and NMU men’s basketball teams are also in Alaska, for the Seawolves Thanksgiving Classic. The Huskies will take on host Alaska-Anchorage tonight, and the Wildcats will face Alaska. The Michigan teams will switch Alaskan opponents tomorrow.

The Tech women’s basketball team has the weekend off. 

The NMU women’s team is at the Drury University Thanksgiving Tournament. They’ll play Truman State University tonight, and Drury tomorrow.

Finlandia

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team is at the Wisconsin-LaCrosse Thanksgiving Classic. The Lions will play the host team tonight, and Wisconsin-River Falls tomorrow afternoon.

The Finlandia men’s hockey team plays a home-and-home series against Northland College. Tonight’s game is in Ashland. Tomorrow’s begins at 7:00 at the Houghton County Arena.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Philadelphia Flyers this afternoon. Coverage begins at 3:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Wings have called goalie Calvin Pickard up from Grand Rapids. Starter Jimmy Howard is out with an injury, and backup Jonathan Bernier is sick.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons host the Charlotte Hornets tonight. Coverage will follow Red Wings hockey on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL

On the Thanksgiving NFL schedule yesterday…
– Mitchell Trubisky’s short touchdown pass with 2:22 remaining gave the Chicago Bears a 24-20 victory over the Detroit Lions. In his first start, rookie quarterback David Blough completed 22 of 38 passes for 280 yards and two touchdowns. Bo Scarbrough rushed for 83 yards. The loss officially eliminated the Lions from the playoffs.
– The Buffalo Bills stopped the Dallas Cowboys 26-15.
– The New Orleans Saints got past the Atlanta Falcons 26-18.

The Green Bay Packers visit the New York Giants for a 1:00 game Sunday.
