Coca Cola Sweeps Fast Pitch DH – Thursday Sports Wrap

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost their sixth straight game last night, falling 4-1 to the Texas Rangers. Matthew Boyd struck out 11 over seven innings, but served up two homers, and allowed all four Texas runs. Brandon Dixon’s solo homer accounted for Detroit’s only run.

The Tigers host the Rangers again this afternoon. Spencer Turnbull will start against Ariel Jurado. Pregame coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Jeimer Candelario returned to third base for the Tigers last night, after some time at Toledo to work on his swing, and some time on the injured list. Dawel Lugo was sent down to the Mud Hens to make room.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost to the Seattle Mariners 4-2 last evening. The Mariners jumped on spot starter Adrian Houser for two runs in the first inning, and another in the second. Home runs by Mike Moustakas and Ben Gamel in the sixth inning closed the gap, but Seattle tacked on an insurance run off Jeremy Jeffress in the ninth to close out the win.

The Brewers will entertain the Mariners again this afternoon. Chase Anderson will pitch against Mike Leake.

Fast Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League play last night, Coca Cola of Hancock swept its doubleheader against Northern Michigan Land Brokers 11-4 and 7-1. Delany Heinonen struck out eight and earned the win for Coca Cola in the opener. Emilie Scholie had a single and a double for Coca Cola in the nightcap.

Slow Pitch Softball

In Copper Country Slow Pitch Softball League action last evening…
– Bucko’s/Labatt’s v A and S Industrial, and v Pat’s Foods/Bucko’s – not reported.
– Lake Superior Design v Downtowner Two, and v Coca Cola/Monte Carlo – not reported.
– Koppers scored 18 runs in the top of the first inning, but Auto Pro/ThermoAnalytics came back to earn a 26-24 victory. Logan Rastello and Jason Carne each had five hits for Auto Pro. The result of Koppers’ game against Luigi’s was not reported.

Twilight League Baseball

In Copper Country Twilight League baseball play tonight…
– Superior National Bank-Stanton takes on Dean Kangas-State Farm at the Hancock Driving Park.
– REL-Mohawk Technology plays Garnet Garage at the Stanton Field.

American Legion Baseball

The Copper Country Flames American Legion Baseball team doubleheader against the Niagara Badgers scheduled for today has been canceled because of schedule conflicts.

College World Series

Vanderbilt University defeated the University of Michigan 8-2 last evening to win the College World Series. The Commodores claimed the best-of-three set two games to one.

NMU

Matt Majkrzak was introduced yesterday as the new head men’s basketball coach at Northern Michigan University. Majkrzak spent last season as the head coach at Bryant and Stratton College in Wisconsin, where he led the Bobcats to a record of 25-8, and a national junior college ranking. Before that, he was the top assistant coach at Bemidji State University for four seasons.
