Chassell Sweeps D3 U.P. Cross Country Meet; Hancock Girls Win D2 Crown – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell lost to Gladstone 44-22.
– Ontonagon blanked Atlanta 24-0.

The high school football playoff pairings will be announced this evening. Calumet is the only local team likely to qualify. The Copper Kings will host their opening-round game next weekend. We’ll follow them as far as they go on KBear102.3 and KBear102.com.

Chassell swept the Division Three championships yesterday at the U.P. finals Munising, each winning their fourth title in the past five years. The girls placed all five qualifying runners in the top-10, with Lela Rautiola third, Paige Sleeman fifth, Jenna Pietila sixth, Gwen Kangas seventh, and Kamryn Sohlden ninth. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City placed fourth as a team, and Jeffers finished sixth. The Panther boys placed three runners in the top-10 – Ben Tuomi was fourth, Daba Holmes eighth, and Abe Gockenbach ninth. Ewen-Trout Creek finished seventh in the team standings, with Dollar Bay-Tamarack City ninth, and Jeffers 10th. Dollar Bay’s Davin Hill placed fourth individually.

The Hancock girls won the Division Two title. Four Bulldogs placed in the top-10 individually – Kalli Chynoweth fifth, Ellie Sturos sixth, Jacie Anderson eighth, and Kirsten Dennis ninth.  Hancock did not have enough boys runners to qualify for team placement.

The Houghton girls placed three runners in the top-10, but wound up third as a team. Anabel Needham finished third, Maria Velat fifth, and Ingrid Seagren sixth, but the next-highest Gremlins’ finisher was 27th. Calumet placed eighth. The Houghton boys came in second, with Joe Wood second individually, and Clayton Bulleit ninth.

Finlandia
At the Albion-Olivet Invitational yesterday, the Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 (13-25, 21-25, 10-25) to Olivet College, and 3-1 (25-20, 15-25, 17-25, 23-25) to Wisconsin-Platteville. Shannon Anderson led the Lions with 21 kills in the two matches.

The Finlandia women’s soccer team suffered just its second loss of the season yesterday, falling at Bethany Lutheran College 2-1. Alexia Gonzales gave the Lions an early lead, but the Vikings scored two late goals to take the game.

The FinnU men’s soccer team lost 3-0 at Bethany Lutheran yesterday.

The Lions football team lost 31-0 to Trine University on a snow-covered McAfee Field yesterday. Former Baraga standout Dillion Hueckstaedt broke his own school record with 24 tackles in the game.

MTU
The MTU volleyball team earned a gritty 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 11-25, 25-18) decision over Saginaw Valley State yesterday afternoon. Olivia Ghormley had 15 kills for the Huskies, and Anna Joynas recorded 18 digs. Laura DeMarchi led all players with 44 assists.

The Tech football team fell 27-7 at Ashland yesterday afternoon. The Huskies’ only score came in the final minute.

The Michigan Tech soccer team will play at Ashland University today.

The Huskies hockey team had the weekend off.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team overwhelmed NAIA school Lawrence Tech 65-7 yesterday.

The NMU hockey team lost 5-0 at fourth-ranked Saint Cloud State last night.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers’ season ended last night with a 5-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the seventh game of the National League Championship Series. Christian Yelich’s homer in the first inning turned out to be Milwaukee’s only run. Cody Bellinger gave L-A the lead with a two-run homer off Jhoulys Chacín in the second inning. Yasiel Puig’s three-run shot off Jeremy Jeffress in the sixth concluded the scoring.

The Dodgers will face the Red Sox in the World Series beginning Tuesday night in Boston.

NBA
Blake Griffin scored 33 points as the Detroit Pistons edged the Chicago Bulls 118-116 last night. Ish Smith’s layup with five seconds remaining was the game-winner. The Pistons will host the Philadelphia 76ers Tuesday evening. Pregame coverage will begin at 6:30 on 99.3 The Lift.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings earned their first victory of the season last night, edging the Panthers 4-3 in overtime. Gustav Nyquist netted the game-winner. Dennis Cholowski, Thomas Vanek and and Dylan Larkin also scored. Jimmy Howard stopped 34 shots. The Wings entertain the Carolina Hurricanes tomorrow night. Because of NFL football, pregame coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NFL
The Detroit Lions visit the Miami Dolphins for a 1:00 game today. Ezekiel Ansah will miss the game because of a shoulder injury. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift. The Green Bay Packers are off this weekend.

LSPR
Joseph Burke and Karen Jankowski took the title at the Lake Superior Performance Rally, finishing 20 seconds ahead of season points leaders Dave and Mike Brown. The local team of Matt and Adelinn Huuki finished third overall. For full results, click here.
