Chassell Girls Win Houghton XC Invite – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Houghton got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 3-1.
– Hancock v L’Anse – not reported.
– Calumet swept Gwinn 3-0 (25-19, 25-23, 25-17).
– Chassell v Wakefield-Marenisco – not reported.
– Ontonagon v Watersmeet – not reported.
– Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Bessemer 3-0.

In volleyball tonight, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City visits Baraga. Tomorrow, Lake Linden-Hubbell, Jeffers, and Ewen-Trout Creek play at the Ironwood/Hurley Invitational.

In cross country, at the Houghton Invitational on the Tech Trails yesterday…
– Chassell claimed the girls crown, followed by Houghton and Hancock. Calumet finished sixth, Jeffers seventh, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City eighth. For the Panthers, Lela Rautiola finished fifth, with Jenna Pietila sixth, and Paige Sleeman 10th. For Houghton, Anabel Needham, Maria Velat and Ingrid Seagren placed second, third and seventh. Hancock’s Kalli Chynoweth was ninth.
– Ishpeming won the boys meet, with Houghton second, Chassell fourth, Ewen-Trout Creek seventh, and Jeffers 10th. Uriah Aili from the Gogebic Miners placed first overall by one second over Ironwood’s Nick Niemi. Houghton’s Joe Wood placed fourth, and Brandon Peterson ninth. Chassell’s Ben Tuomi was seventh. Nik Thomas from Ewen-Trout Creek was eighth.

– Hancock hosts Iron Mountain.
– L’Anse welcomes Westwood.
– Ontonagon entertains Stephenson.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team shut out Crown College 3-0 last evening. Kirsten L’Esperance scored all three Lions goals.

The Finlandia men’s team played to a 1-1 tie with Crown. Junior Espino scored the Lions’ goal.

The women’s soccer team will host Grace Christian University tomorrow at 6:30 at McAfee Field.

The Lions volleyball team plays at Macalester College in Saint Paul tonight, and will face Wisconsin-River Falls and Hamline University tomorrow.

The first-ever Finlandia homecoming football game will be played tomorrow afternoon. The Lions will entertain unbeaten Kalamazoo College. Our broadcast will begin at 12:40 on 99.3 The Lift, and TheLift.com.

MTU
The Michigan Tech soccer team plays at Grand Valley State tonight.

The Huskies volleyball team visits Purdue-Northwest tonight, and Wisconsin-Parkside tomorrow.

The Tech football team will face Ferris State tomorrow at Fifth Third Ballpark in Grand Rapids.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University football team will host Northwood tomorrow afternoon.

MLB
Mike Moustakas’ RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning gave the Milwaukee Brewers a 3-2 victory over the Colorado Rockies in the opening game of their National League Divisional Series last night. Christian Yelich gave the Crew a 2-0 lead with a home run in the third inning. Four Milwaukee pitchers had held Colorado to just one hit over the first eight frames, but the Rockies tied the game with a pair of runs off Jeremy Jeffress in the ninth. The Brewers will host the Rockies again this afternoon. Jhoulys Chacín will start against Tyler Anderson.

The Los Angeles Dodgers blanked the Atlanta Braves 6-0 in the first game of the other National League Divisional Series last night. That series continues in Los Angeles tonight.

Both American League Divisional Series begin today. The Houston Astros entertain the Cleveland Indians this afternoon, and the Boston Red Sox entertain the New York Yankees tonight.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings opened their NHL season with a 3-2 overtime loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets last night. Dennis Cholowski scored his first NHL goal for Detroit, and Tyler Bertuzzi also found the net. Gustav Nyquist had two assists. Jimmy Howard made 36 saves. The Wings will visit the Los Angeles Kings on Sunday. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, pregame coverage will begin at 10:05 on KBear 102.3.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons continue their preseason schedule tonight against the Spurs in San Antonio. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the New England Patriots defeated the Indianapolis Colts 38-24. Tom Brady threw his 500th career touchdown pass.
