Chassell Girls Rule All-Copper Mountain Conference XC Team – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school volleyball last night…
– Hancock defeated Ishpeming 3-1.
– Calumet swept Westwood 3-0 (25-9, 25-9, 25-23).
– Lake Linden-Hubbell v Baraga – not reported.
– L’Anse fell to Negaunee 3-1.
– Ontonagon lost to Wakefield-Marenisco 3-0.
– Ewen-Trout Creek blanked Watersmeet 3-0.
– Jeffers fell to Bessemer 3-2 (17-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-23, 10-15)..

In volleyball tonight, Chassell plays at Dollar Bay-Tamarack City. Tomorrow, Houghton, Calumet, Gwinn, West Iron County, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and L’Anse will compete at the WestPAC/MidPen Invitational at Houghton.

In cross country…
– Houghton, Hancock and Calumet at the WestPAC meet – results not reported.
– Chassell, Baraga and Jeffers at the Copper Mountain Conference meet – results not reported.

Chassell dominated the girls Copper Mountain All-Conference squad. Lela Rautiola was named Runner of the Year. She’s joined in the top seven by Jenna Pietila, Paige Sleeman, Gwen Kangas and Kamryn Sohlden. Meg Keranen from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Keena Larson from Jeffers round out the first team. Chassell was named the women’s Team of the Year.

Gogebic was named boys’ team of the Year, and Uriah Aili of the Miners was Runner of the Year. Local runners on the first team include Ben Tuomi and Kurtis Kytta from Chassell, and Davin Hill from Dollar Bay-Tamarack City.

– Houghton entertains Negaunee. Pregame coverage of the first game at the new Houghton field will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
– Calumet will put its unbeaten record on the line at Hancock.
– L’Anse travels to Iron Mountain.
– Ontonagon visits Forest Park.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University men’s soccer team will play at Grace Christian University this afternoon.

The women’s soccer team will face Rockford University in Milwaukee tomorrow.

The Lions volleyball team heads to Plymouth, Wisconsin for a triangular at Lakeland University tomorrow afternoon. They’ll face the host Muskies, and Central College from Iowa.

The Finlandia football team will play Hope College in Holland, Michigan, tomorrow.

MTU
Seven new members will be added to the Michigan Tech Sports Hall of Fame this weekend. The inductees include football players Joe Berger and Jim Peters… hockey players Steve Coates and Kip Noble… basketball player Mike Kissman… skier, track and cross country standout Kristina Owen… and former sports information director Denis Hanks.

The Michigan Tech volleyball team plays at a tournament in Indianapolis this weekend. The Huskies will face Truman State University and Tiffin University today, and Rockhurst University tomorrow.

The MTU soccer team entertains Purdue Northwest tonight at 5:00.

The Tech hockey team opens its season this weekend at home against Minnesota-Duluth. Faceoffs are at 7:37 tonight, and 7:07 tomorrow night at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena.

The MTU football team hosts Wayne State tomorrow at 1:00.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team starts its campaign tonight and tomorrow night at Michigan State.

The Wildcats football team plays at Saginaw Valley State tomorrow afternoon.

MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers host the Los Angeles Dodgers in the opening game of the National League Championship Series tonight. Gio Gonzalez will start against Clayton Kershaw.

The American League Championship Series between the Red Sox and Astros begins tomorrow in Boston.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings are still looking for their first win of the season, following a 5-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs last night. Nick Jensen scored twice for the Wings. Dylan Larkin’s goal in the third period closed the gap to one point, but the Leafs scored a late empty-netter to put the game away. Jimmy Howard made 30 saves. The Wings will visit the Boston Bruins tomorrow. Because of the Red Sox baseball game, the hockey contest has been rescheduled to the afternoon. Pregame coverage will begin at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons will wrap up their preseason campaign tonight at Cleveland. Listen for selected Pistons regular-season games on 99.3 The Lift.

NFL
In last night’s NFL game, the Philadelphia Eagles dominated the New York Giants 34-13.

The Detroit Lions are off this weekend. The Green Bay Packers host the San Francisco 49ers Monday night. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
