Chassell Girls, Houghton Boys Claim UP XC Crowns – Sunday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school football yesterday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell throttled Manistique 53-12. With a record of 4-4, the Lakes could join Hancock and Calumet in the playoffs. Playoff pairings and locations will be announced tonight. Listen for details of our playoff coverage Monday.

At the Upper Peninsula Cross Country championships yesterday…
– The Chassell girls team won its third U.P. Division Three championship in four years. The Panthers scored 40 points. Mid-Peninsula placed second, with 72. Jeffers placed fifth, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City seventh out of the seven teams competing. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola placed third individually. Jenna Pietila, Paige Sleeman and Gwen Kangas placed seventh, eighth and ninth. See full girls Division Three results here.
– Hancock finished fourth out of six teams in Division Two. Makenna Nuttall of the Bulldogs placed ninth individually. See full girls Division Two results here.
– In Division One, Calumet placed sixth, and Houghton seventh, out of 10 teams. Clarity Gipp of the Copper Kings finished fifth individually. Anabel Needham of the Gremlins placed 16th. See full girls Division One results here.

– The Houghton boys claimed the Division One boys title for the first time in six years. Clayton Sayen of the Gremlins finished first overall, edging out Marquette’s Garrett Rudden by a slim tenth of a second. Houghton’s Seth Helman and Leif Odegard placed fifth and seventh. Calumet finished seventh out of the eight teams competing. See full boys Division One results here.
– The Gogebic Miners placed five runners in the top seven, and claimed the Division Two boys title. Hancock finished fifth out of the six teams competing. See full boys Division Two results here.
– The Chassell boys tied with Brimley in the points total for the Division Three championship, but Brimley earned the trophy through a tiebreaker. Ben Tuomi and Kurtis Kytta of the Panthers placed third and sixth individually. Jeffers finished eighth out of the 14 teams competing. Dollar Bay placed 13th, with Blue Bolt Davin Hill finishing seventh individually. See full boys Division Three results here.

In hockey, Team Copper Country will face Lansing in the finals of the Split Season League Playoffs at Jackson today. It’s a rematch of Friday’s opening game of the tournament, which Team CC won 8-0. A victory today by Team Copper Country would guarantee them a berth in the state championship next spring, and an opportunity to defend their national title.

Finlandia
The Finlandia University volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-13, 25-14, 25-9) to Wisconsin-Platteville yesterday.

The Finlandia men’s soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at the Illinois Institute of Technology yesterday. The Lions women’s team fell to Illinois Tech 7-0. The Lady Lions close their season with a record of 1-11-1.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team’s five-game unbeaten streak ended with a 4-2 loss to Alabama-Huntsville last night. The Huskies took an early lead on a Thomas Beretta tally, but the Chargers scored three straight goals to take command. Gavin Gould scored late to tighten the game, but UA-H put it away with an empty-netter.

The MTU volleyball team swept Purdue Northwest 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-11) yesterday. Olivia Ghormley had 15 kills for the Huskies, and Elle Heinonen recorded 25 digs.

The Huskies football team dropped a 20-14 decision to Wayne State in the Homecoming game yesterday afternoon. The Huskies led 14-9 at halftime, thanks to a 93-yard kickoff return by Jacob Wenzlick, and a 13-yard touchdown run by John Williams. but were shut out in the second half.

The MTU soccer team will host Ferris State today at noon.

NMU
The Northern Michigan University hockey team lost to the University of Wisconsin 4-0 at the Resch Center in Green Bay last night.

A late drive by the NMU football team came up short, and the Wildcats lost 20-12 to Saginaw Valley State yesterday afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings host the Vancouver Canucks tonight. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, hockey coverage will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

The Wings sent center Riley Sheahan to the Pittsburgh Penguins yesterday. In exchange, they get left wing Scott Wilson. Detroit also included its fifth-round pick in the 2018 draft. They will get the Penguins’ third-round selection. The move opens up enough salary cap space to add Andreas Athanasiou to the roster. After an extended discussion, Athanasiou agreed to a one-year, 1.4-million dollar deal on Friday.

Detroit also traded defenseman Ryan Sproul to the New York Rangers, in exchange for winger Matt Puempel. Puempel has been assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins.

NBA
The Detroit Pistons overcame a 21-point deficit, and defeated the New York Knicks 111-107 last night. Tobias Harris led Detroit with 31 points. Andre Drummond grabbed a dozen rebounds. The Pistons host the Philadelphia 76ers tomorrow night.

MLB
The Houston Astros advanced to the World Series with a 4-0 victory over the New York Yankees last night. Houston won the American League Championship Series four games to three, and will face the Los Angeles Dodgers in the Fall Classic beginning Tuesday. Former Detroit Tigers pitcher Justin Verlander, who won two games for the Astros in the ALCS, was named the series Most Valuable Player.

NFL
Brett Hundley will start at quarterback, as the Green Bay Packers host the New Orleans Saints today. Kickoff is at 1:00.

LSPR
Justin Pritchard and Rachelle Kaltak used a strong second-day performance to claim the title at the Lake Superior Performance Rally yesterday. They finished 30 seconds ahead of Timothy Rooney and Ole Holter, who claimed honors in the Super Production division.  Ryan Millen and Rhianon Gelsomino placed third overall, and took first place in the two-wheel drive competiton. First-day leaders Arkadiusz Gruszka and Lukasz Wronskiare dropped to fifth place. The local team of Matt and Janell Huuki finished sixth. See full results here.
