Chassell Girls Advance to State Hoops Title Game – Friday Sports Wrap

High School
The Chassell girls basketball team will play for a state title tomorrow. The Panthers advanced with a 55-51 victory over Waterford Our Lady in the semifinals yesterday. Chassell struggled early against Our Lady’s press, and trailed by nine at halftime. A third quarter run brought the Panthers back, and Chassell wound up outscoring the Lakers 31-18 in the second half. Milly Allen led Chassell with 17 points, and hit some critical free throws in the closing seconds to seal the win. Sydney Danison added 15 points, Jenna Pietila scored 11, and Meg Hokenson had 10.

Chassell will face Adrian Lenawee Christian in tomorrow’s championship game. Tipoff will be at 10:00 at Van Noord Arena on the Calvin College Campus in Grand Rapids. Lenawee Christian defeated Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart 46-44 in overtime in the other semifinal.

Team CC
Team Copper Country begins its quest for a state championship tonight, when it faces the Kensington Valley Rebels at 7:00. Pool play will continue against the Lansing Split Season team tomorrow at 10:30, and the Lansing Spartans tomorrow evening at 6:00. The semifinals and championship match will be played on Sunday. Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team won all three of its games on the opening day of the North Central University Dome Tournament in Plymouth, Minnesota, yesterday. In the first contest, Denia Bent threw a perfect game, as they cruised to a 26-0 victory over Maranatha Baptist. Finlandia broke out early, scoring nine runs in the first inning. In the second contest, the Lions got past Minnesota-Morris 14-10. Makenna Gorham had four hits, and drive in four runs. In the final game, Finlandia shut down the host North Central Rams 9-1. Harlie Caster had five hits.

Today, the Lions will meet Minnesota-Morris at 9:00, the host Rams at 11:30, and Maranatha Baptist at 1:30.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team will face Northern Michigan University for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association title tomorrow night. The game will begin at 7:07 in Marquette. MTU is hosting a watch party at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. Doors open at 6:00, and there is no charge.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings’ losing streak reached eight games last night, with a 4-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings. Gustav Nyquist scored Detroit’s only goal. Jared Coreau took the loss in net. The Wings visit the Anaheim Ducks tonight. Pregame coverage begins at 9:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

NBA
The fading Detroit Pistons couldn’t overcome a 26-point third-quarter deficit, and fell 120-113 to the Nuggets at Denver last night. Blake Griffin scored 26 for Detroit. The Pistons have lost nine of the last 12 games, and play the Trail Blazers in Portland tomorrow night. Pregame coverage starts at 9:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB
In spring training baseball, the Detroit Tigers dropped an 8-1 decision to the Atlanta Braves yesterday. Starter Mike Fiers gave up five runs over four innings. The Tigers will face the Philadelphia Phillies this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers lost 6-5 to the Texas Rangers yesterday. Starter Brent Suter allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings. Eric Sogard and prospect Dustin Houle homered. The Brewers take on the Cincinnati Reds this afternoon.

CC Oldtimers Tourney
The Copper Country Oldtimers Tournament continues through the weekend, with games at the Houghton County Arena, Dee Stadium, and the Calumet Colosseum. A $5.00 ticket gets you into as many games as you wish to see. Get the latest schedule and tournament information from their Facebook page.

In conjunction with the Oldtimers Tournament, both the Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines have scheduled fundraisers tomorrow. The Pioneers will serve pancakes at Dee Stadium between 8:00 and noon. The Wolverines will serve spaghetti at the Colosseum between 11:00 and 6:00. Both of those teams return to action next weekend, as Calumet hosts the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament. We’ll broadcast all of their games on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
