Chassell Claims Boys U.P. D-3 Golf Title – Friday Sports Wrap

Chassell boys golf team

In high school golf yesterday…
• Chassell won the Division Three U.P. boys golf title, finishing two strokes better than North Central. Ontonagon placed fourth, and Dollar Bay-Tamarack City sixth. Individually, Ontonagon’s Tomas Immonen finished second. Dean Pietila of the Panthers finished third, and Chassell’s Todd Rautiola tied with Dollar Bay’s Davin Hill for sixth. • No local school had enough golfers to qualify for the team competition in the girls Division Three tournament. Individually, Ontonagon’s Madyson Pamit placed sixth, and Emmy Bobula ninth. See full D-3 girls results here.
• Houghton placed second in the Division One boys competition, five strokes behind Marquette. Calumet finished third. For the Gremlins, Brady Schmierer and Marino Pisani tied for third individually. Dean Loukus led the Copper Kings with an eighth place finish. See full D-1 boys results here.
• The Houghton girls placed fourth, with Keegan Leonard earning a fifth-place individual finish. See full D-2 girls results here.

In district softball tournament play today…
• In Division Three at Houghton High School, Houghton faces Westwood in the first semifinal at 11:00. Calumet and Negaunee will play in the second semifinal, with the championship game will follow.
• In Division Four at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden, Lake Linden-Hubbell will play Gogebic in the first semifinal at 11:00. Hancock will face Ironwood in the second semifinal, with the title game to follow. We will broadcast both semifinals on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com beginning at 10:40, and will also air the championship game if either the Lakes or Bulldogs advance.

In district baseball tournament play today…
• In Division Three at Houghton High School, Houghton faces Iron Mountain in the first semifinal at noon. Calumet and Negaunee will play in the second semifinal, with the championship game to follow. We will broadcast both semifinals on 97.7 The Wolf and TheWolf.com beginning at 11:40, and will also air the championship game if either the Gremlins or Copper Kings advance.
• In Division Four at the Stanton field, Jeffers will meet Ironwood in the first semifinal at 11:00. L’Anse takes on Gogebic in the second semifinal, with the title game to follow.

Former Calumet baseball standout Sam Kiiskila will play for Bay College beginning next season. Kiiskila spent the last year playing post-graduate/college prep baseball for the Scotland Campus Knights in Scotland, Pennsylvania. He’ll catch, play third base, and be available for other utility roles for the Norse. Kiiskila will become the first Calumet High School baseball player in the modern era to play college baseball.

The U.P. track and field championships for boys and girls in all divisions will take place tomorrow at Kingsford.

The Hancock Boosters will hold a returnable can and bottle drive tomorrow. Donations may be brought to the parking lot adjacent to the Finlandia Health Science building, behind Hancock City Hall, between 9:00 and noon.

College Volleyball

The Michigan Tech volleyball team has announced its fall schedule. The season will open September 2nd with the Keweenaw Classic at the SDC. Tech, Northern Michigan, Lake Superior State and Parkside will face Minnesota-Duluth, Minnesota State, Saint Cloud State and Concordia-Saint Paul from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. Conference play begins at home against Grand Valley State September 17th. Games against NMU will take place in Houghton October 9th, and in Marquette October 30th.

College Football

The Finlandia University football team has added a new recruit. Byron Owens is a receiver from Dallas, Texas.

College Baseball

The Finlandia baseball team has also added a new player. Joey Britt is a pitcher from Jacksonville, Florida.

In NBA tournament opening-round play yesterday…
• The Nuggets ousted the Trail Blazers 126-115. Denver wins that series 4-2.
• The Suns dispatched the Lakers 113-100. Phoenix wins that set 4-2.

• The Mavericks host the Clippers. Dallas leads that series 3-2.

NHL

In the NHL tournament second-round play last evening…
• The Bruins edged the Islanders 2-1. Boston leads that series 2-1.
• The Hurricanes shaded the Lightning 3-2 in overtime. Tampa Bay leads that set 2-1.

Tonight…
• The Jets host the Canadiens. Montreal leads that series 1-0.
• The Golden Knights welcome the Avalanche. Colorado leads that set 2-0.

MLB

The Detroit Tigers lost 4-1 to the Chicago White Sox last night. Casey Mize gave up three solo home runs over seven innings, and took the loss. Willi Castro homered for Detroit.

The Tigers continue that series in Chicago tonight. Spencer Turnbull will start against Dallas Keuchel. Coverage begins at 7:50 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed outfielder Victor Reyes on the injured list with a left intercostal strain. Outfielder Derek Hill has been called up from Toledo to fill in.

The Milwaukee Brewers blasted four home runs, and defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-4 last evening. Jackie Bradley, Jr., Christian Yelich, Luis Urías and Avisaíl García went deep. Starter Brett Anderson struggled, giving up three runs on eight hits before leaving in the fifth inning. Brent Suter got the win in relief, and Josh Hader earned his 13th save.

The Brewers host the Diamondbacks again this evening. Freddy Peralta will pitch against Matt Peacock.

Milwaukee second baseman Kolten Wong left last night’s game after a swinging strikeout in the third inning. Officials say he reaggravated the left oblique strain that sent him to the injured list earlier this season. For the moment, he’s considered day-to-day.

Before the game, the Brewers sent reliever Alec Bettinger down to Nashville, and called up reliever Hoby Milner.
