Chassell Boys Upset DB-TC – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

In high school boys basketball last night…
– Chassell stunned Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 60-48. Karl Rautiola led the Panthers with 22 points, and Bill Rautiola chipped in 19. Davin Hill scored 11 for the previously unbeaten Blue Bolts.
– Hancock lost 92-39 at West Iron County. Vanden Jacques scored 13 for the Bulldogs.
– Calumet got past Lake Linden-Hubbell 58-46. Trevor Torola scored 16 for the Copper Kings, and Bevin Antilla added 15. Alex Marhley had 17 for the Lakes.
– Jeffers overpowered L’Anse 64-28.
– Baraga lost at Watersmeet 71-54.
– Ontonagon defeated Bessemer 50-39.
– Ewen-Trout Creek outscored Stephenson 61-50. 

In girls hoops last night, Calumet overwhelmed Lake Linden-Hubbell 67-17. Ellie Djerf led the Copper Kings with 27 points. Kaci Destrampe scored nine for the Lakes.

The girls district playoffs begin Monday.

Western Collegiate Hockey Association

The Michigan Tech hockey team routed Northern Michigan University 8-4 last night. Trenton Bliss had a hat trick. Alec Broetzman scored twice. Grayson Reitmeier, Alex Smith and Logan Ganie also found the net, as the Huskies scored their most goals ever at the Berry Events Center. Those teams wrap up their regular seasons tonight at 6:07 at the SDC.

Finlandia University

The Finlandia University women’s basketball team opens play in the ACAA tournament this evening in Milwaukee. The second-seeded Lions will face third-seeded Pine Manor. The pregame show will begin around 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift and 993TheLift.com. Top seed UC Santa Cruz will face host Mount Mary in the other semifinal. If the Lions advance to the championship game tomorrow, we will broadcast it at 11:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Finlandia softball team begins its southern schedule tomorrow, with games against Clark College and Kenyon College.

GLHL

The Portage Lake Pioneers outscored the Marquette Mutineers 10-4 last night.

The Calumet Wolverines have the weekend off.

NHL

The Detroit Red Wings visit the Ottawa Senators tonight. Because of Finlandia basketball coverage on 99.3 The Lift, the Wings’ pregame show will begin at 6:40 on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Detroit Pistons snapped their seven-game losing streak with a 113-111 victory over the Phoenix Suns last night. Derrick Rose scored 31.

The Pistons visit the Sacramento Kings tomorrow. Coverage begins at 5:35 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

In spring baseball, the Detroit Tigers lost 5-4 to the Toronto Blue Jays yesterday. Starter Ivan Nova was touched for three runs in the first inning. Prospect Daniel Pinero homered.

The Tigers face the New York Yankees this afternoon.

The Milwaukee Brewers edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-5 yesterday. Brandon Woodruff allowed a run over two innings. Keston Hiura homered.

The Brewers play the Chicago Cubs today.

CopperDog 150

Ben Thompson won the CopperDog 25 last night, scorching the downhill course from Calumet to Gay in 1:31:30 – a blazing speed of 15.4 miles per hour. In his first appearance at the CopperDog, Thompson finished 13 minutes ahead of defending champion Geri Minard. Among local mushers, Susan Serafini finished fifth. From the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech, Rachel Falls was ninth, Reagan Swartz was 10th, and Cole Sturm was 12th.

Veteran Michael Bestgen leads a tightly-bunched field after the first leg of the CopperDog 150. Bestgen finished the run from Calumet to Eagle Harbor 20 seconds faster than Joanna Oberg. Ryan Anderson is 50 seconds off the pace, and defending champion Martha Schouweiler and Joann Fortier are both within four minutes of the lead. Among local mushers, Tom Bauer is eighth, Christian Stevens is 12th, and Chad Grentz is 13th. Stage Two of the CopperDog 150 from Eagle Harbor to Copper Harbor takes place today. Calumet’s Jerry Trudell leads the CopperDog 80 after the first stage last night. The defending champion holds a three-minute lead over Alex LaPlante. Andrea DeBoer is another 16 seconds back, in third place. Among local mushers, Becky Bean is 11th. From the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech, Colie Fleming is sixth, and Ty Longstreet is eighth. After a day off today, the CopperDog 80 wraps up tomorrow, with a run from Copper Harbor to Calumet.
