High School
In cross country, the Chassell boys won their third straight UP Division Three championship Saturday. The Panthers outpointed second-place Brimley. Chassell’s Ben Tuomi finished third individually. Hunter Rautiola was fifth, as the Panthers placed five runners in the top-20. Each of the Chassell boys set personal bests on the course at Gladstone. Republic-Michigame placed seventh. Jeffers was ninth out of 11 competing teams. Jackson Rocchi paced the Jets with a 16th place individual finish. Brendan LeClaire of Dollar Bay placed second individually. The Blue Bolts did not compete as a team.
The Chassell girls fell just short of claiming their third straight UP title, finishing as runners-up behind a strong Les Cheneaux team from Cedarville. Five Panther runners finished in the top-16, but Les Cheneaux placed five in the top 14 to claim the team victory. Chassell’s Lela Rautiola was the individual winner. Gwen Kangas finished seventh, and Maelene Warren ninth. Dollar Bay finished third as a team, with Cami Daavettilla third overall, Taylor Busser 10th, and Natalie Maxson 11th. Five teams competed.
The Hancock boys team ran fifth out of the seven teams competing in Division Two. Murphy Mallow was the Bulldogs’ top individual finisher, in 17th place. The Hancock girls placed third out of nine competing teams. Makenna Nuttall finished 10th individually.
In the Division One boys’ competition, Houghton placed second, and Calumet fifth in the 11-team field. Clayton Sayen led the Gremlins with a third-place individual finish. Seth Helman placed fifth, and Nicholas Wilson ninth. Mitchel Delong finished sixth overall for the Copper Kings.
In the girls’ race, Houghton placed third, and Calumet seventh, among 10 competing teams. Madeline Lehman paced the Gremlins with a 15th-place individual finish. The Copper Kings’ top finisher was Greta Poyhonen, at 18th place.

In high school football Saturday…
– Lake Linden-Hubbell completed its second-straight undefeated regular season with a 28-6 victory over Munising. The win earned the Lakes the championship of the Mid-Eastern Conference. They and the Calumet Copper Kings will continue into the high school playoffs next weekend. We will cover all of the games from both teams on KBear 102.3, KBear102.com, and our sister stations.

MTU
The Michigan Tech hockey team outshot the University of Michigan 45-18 Saturday night, but had to settle for a 3-3 tie in Ann Arbor. Thomas Beretta’s first goal as a Husky gave Tech a 3-2 lead midway through the third period, but Matt Wintjes was caught out of the crease with 4:10 remaining in regulation, and the Wolverines’ Cutler Martin fired the puck into the open net.
The Tech volleyball team completed a weekend sweep with a 3-0 (25-15, 25-21, 25-18) victory over Ohio Dominican Saturday afternoon.
The MTU soccer team entertains Tiffin today at noon.
The MTU football team suffered a 17-3 loss at Northwood Saturday afternoon. Brandon Cowie completed 22 of 37 passes for 224 yards, but the Huskies were held to just 79 yards on the ground. Tech has lost four games in a row – their longest losing streak since 2008.
Both Tech cross country teams placed sixth at the GLIAC championship at Big Rapids Saturday. Sophia Farquhar placed 16th individually to lead the women’s squad, and Matt Pahl led the men with a 17th-place finish. See full results here.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie against Ferris State Saturday night.
The Wildcats football team fell behind early, and lost to Ohio Dominican 38-28 Saturday afternoon.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University football team earned its first victory of the season Saturday, edging Maranatha Baptist University 27-22 at McAfee Field. The Lions got off to a quick start, with two touchdowns in the first quarter. They led 20-3 at halftime. Henry Williams rushed for 157 yards and a touchdown on 30 carries.
The Finlandia volleyball team lost 3-0 (16-25, 10-25, 20-25) at Lake Superior State Saturday afternoon.
NHL
Jimmy Howard made 30 saves, as the Detroit Red Wings blanked the San Jose Sharks 3-o Saturday night. Gustav Nyquist scored twice for Detroit, and Andreas Athanasiou added his first goal of the season. The Wings host the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons have finalized their 15-man opening day roster. Ray McCallum will back up Ish Smith at point guard, until Reggie Jackson recovers from his injury. Lorenzo Brown was the final cut. The Pistons open their season Wednesday night at Toronto.
MLB
The Chicago Cubs are going to the World Series for the first time since 1945. The Cubs won the National League pennant with a 5-0 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers at Wrigley Field Saturday night. The won the National League Championship Series four games to two, and will face the Cleveland Indians in the World Series beginning Tuesday night in Cleveland.
NFL
The Detroit Lions host Washington in a 1:00 game today. Detroit will play without tight end Eric Ebron, linebacker DeAndre Levy, defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, running back Theo Riddick, and tackle Corey Robinson. Check the full injury report here. Hear the broadcast on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
