– Lake Linden-Hubbell held on to first place in the Copper Country Conference with a narrow 38-36 victory over Ontonagon.
– Jeffers upended Baraga 44-31.
– L’Anse defeated Dollar Bay 41-30.

In boys’ action tonight, Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at Republic-Michigamme in a battle for first place in the Copper Country Conference. Both teams are unbeaten. Tonight’s game is a make-up of a snow-out on January 6th.

In high school hockey tonight, Jeffers skates at Hancock.

Portage Lake Pioneers LogoGLHL – Pioneers Split on Road
In Great Lakes Hockey League action, the Portage Lake Pioneers lost to the Mosinee Papermakers 4-2 Friday night. Jay Pietilla scored both of the Portage Lake goals. On Saturday, the Pioneers took a 4-0 lead, then held on to edge the Monroe Blues 4-3. Dave Sproule scored twice.

Huskies Sweep Nanooks
MTU Huskies LogoFor the second time in two nights, the Michigan Tech hockey team came from behind, and beat the University of Alaska 3-2 on Saturday. Tanner Kero scored the game-winner in the third period.

Friday night, Blake Pietila’s goal 2:46 into overtime gave the Huskies a 4-3 victory over Alaska. Joel L’Esperance scored twice, as the Huskies came back from a 3-1 deficit.

Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned victories at Saginaw Valley State Saturday afternoon. The 19th-ranked women’s team built a seven-point halftime lead, then held off the Cardinals for a 69-61 win. Jillian Richie scored 20 for the Huskies.

The men’s team turned a five-point halftime lead into a 66-58 victory over the Cardinals. Jason Hawke led the Huskies with 23 points.

NMU Loses, Ties at PSU
NMU Athletics LogoThe Northern Michigan University hockey team skated to a 5-5 tie at Penn State Saturday night. On Friday, Northern blew a 4-1 lead, and Penn State took a 5-4 victory.

The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team pulled out a 57-54 victory over Hillsdale Saturday. Darius Ware’s dunk with a second remaining gave the Hillsdale men’s team a 59-58 victory over the Wildcats.

Finlandia Lions New LogoFinlandia Men Stun Adrian
The Finlandia men’s hockey team upset 8th-ranked Adrian College 3-0 Friday night. The game was scoreless until Lane King found the net in the third period. Calumet’s Lucas Lahnala added a short-handed insurance goal. Lions’ goalie Andrew Brownlee stopped 41 shots to earn the shutout.

The Bulldogs turned the tables on the Lions Saturday, scoring four goals in the third period to claim a 7-3 victory. Ryan Daavettila scored twice for Finlandia, and Lahnala scored his second goal of the weekend.

The Finlandia women’s team fell at Adrian 10-1 Friday night, and 5-0 on Saturday. The Lions were outshot 111-18 in the two games.

The Finlandia women’s basketball team defeated Maranatha Baptist Bible University 58-48 Saturday afternoon. Marissa Burke lead all scorers with 27 points.

NHL – Red Wings
The Red Wings return to action tomorrow night at Carolina. Faceoff is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3 WCCY.

NBA – Pistons Fall to Raptors
The Pistons lost to the Raptors 114-110 last night. D.J. Augustin made his first start in place of Brandon Jennings, and led Detroit with 35 points. The team confirmed yesterday that Jennings suffered a ruptured Achilles tendon in Saturday night’s game, and will miss the rest of the season. The injury typically requires a six-to-nine month recovery.

The Pistons host the Cavaliers tomorrow night.

NFL – Stafford Named Pro Bowl MVP
Lions’ quarterback Matthew Stafford was named the Most Valuable Player at the NFL Pro Bowl yesterday. Stafford completed 15 of 25 passes for 316 yards, two touchdowns and one interception as Team Irvin defeated Team Carter 32-28. Detroit’s Golden Tate caught one of those TD passes. Jordy Nelson of the Packers caught a TD pass for Team Carter.
