CC Flames Split at Legion Tourney – Friday Sports Wrap

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home set against the Houston Astros tonight. Jordan Zimmermann will start against Dallas Keuchel. Pregame coverage begins at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ skid continued last night with a 15-2 loss to the Washington Nationals. The Nats scored twice in the first inning, then blew the game open by scoring seven times in the third inning, and six times in the fourth. Fill-in starter Michael Blazek was charged with eight runs before leaving in the third. Wily Peralta surrendered seven runs. Travis Shaw and Lewis Brinson hit solo home runs for Milwaukee.

The Brewers have lost nine of their last 11 games. They return home to host the Chicago Cubs tonight. Brent Suter will pitch against Jose Quintana.

American Legion
At the American Legion Class A state tournament in Gladwin yesterday, the Copper Country Flames began the competition with a 7-6 victory over defending champion Hudson. The Flames opened up a 6-0 lead early, but Hudson came back to force extra innings. Logan Fish’s single in the top of the eighth drove home Bailey Ribich with the winning run. The Flames fell to Gaylord 4-0 in their second match of the day, managing no hits off three opposition pitchers. Copper Country will take on Gladstone this morning at 9:00.

Finlandia
Finlandia University has named Bridget Durocher Assistant Athletic Director. Durocher will continue to serve in her current positions as senior women’s administrator, strength and conditioning center coordinator and men’s and women’s cross country head coach. She replaces Phil Milbrath, who has accepted a job as an assistant football coach at Michigan Tech.

Crawford Benefit
A benefit spaghetti dinner will be held tomorrow night at the Elks Lodge in Calumet to raise money to assist former Calumet High School hockey coach Jim Crawford and his family, who are rebuilding after a house fire this spring. Dinner will be served from 5:00 until 8:00. Tickets are $8.00, and are available in advance from any member of the Elks Club, or at the door.
