In high school volleyball last night…

  • Hancock blanked L’Anse 3-0.
  • Ontonagon v Wakefield-Marenisco – no report.

On the volleyball schedule this evening…

  • Houghton plays at Calumet. Coverage will begin around 6:10 on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
  • Hancock travels to Gwinn.
  • Lake Linden-Hubbell plays at L’Anse.
  • Dollar Bay-Tamarack City hosts Ironwood.
  • Jeffers journeys to Ewen-Trout Creek.
  • Chassell welcomes West Iron County.
  • Ontonagon plays at Bessemer.
  • Baraga entertains Watersmeet.

Houghton swept its own invitational cross country meet yesterday.

  • The boys easily outscored Westwood. Negaunee finished third, followed by Calumet, Gwinn and Hancock. Birk Seagren and Benjamin Hemmer of the Gremlins finished first and second individually, and Calumet’s Andrew Junttila was third.
  • The girls took an easy victory over Negaunee. Hancock was third, Calumet fourth, and Westwood fifth. Gremlins runners claimed five of the top seven positions, led by medalist Tessa Rautiola and runner-up Roman Trevino Peterson. Hancock’s Ella Keranen placed fourth.

Menominee dominates the latest U.P. Sportswriters and Sportscasters football poll. The unbeaten Maroons are a unanimous number-one this week. Unbeaten Kingsford is second, followed by Marquette, Negaunee and Iron Mountain.

Forest Park edged out Pickford for the top spot in eight-player football. Norway is ranked third, followed by North Central and Munising.

College Hockey

The Michigan Tech Blue Line Club will host its first luncheon of the season Friday at 11:45 a.m. in the ‘old’ Blue Line Room adjacent to University Images. Michigan Tech head coach Joe Shawhan and Alaska coach Erik Largen will be on hand to talk about this weekend’s series. The event is open to the public and costs $15 per person. Tickets must be purchased by noon tomorrow. Buy them online, by calling the Central Ticket Office at 487-2073, or by visiting the ticket office in person. NHL

The Red Wings open their regular season Thursday at home against the Penguins. Because of NFL football on 99.3 The Lift, the Wings will be broadcast on KBear 102.3.

NBA

The Pistons will host the Suns in a preseason contest tonight. Listen for selected Pistons broadcasts again this season on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Kerry Carpenter’s three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning lifted the Tigers to a 3-0 victory over the Guardians last night. Tarik Skubal gave up just three hits over seven innings, and struck out eight. Will Vest pitched a perfect eighth inning, and earned the win. Beau Brieske hurled a perfect ninth, with two strikeouts, and got the save.

The American League Divisional Series is tied at a win per team, with game three set for tomorrow in Detroit. Coverage will begin at 2:40 on 99.3 The Lift. A programming note – because of NFL football Thursday, game four of the series will be aired on KBear 102.3.

NFL

In last night’s NFL game, the Chiefs remained unbeaten, with a 26-13 victory over the Saints.
