High School

In softball yesterday…
• Calumet split its games against Kingsford, with a 9-7 victory and a 7-1 loss.
• Houghton v Westwood – no report.
• Jeffers v Ironwood – no report.
• Lake Linden-Hubbell swept Gogebic 15-3 and 13-1. Emily Jokela struck out six to earn the win in the first game. Becca Lyons led the offense with two singles, a double, and a triple. Marissa Sullivan and Cleo Milkey each had two hits. Kara Kinnunen struck out six to claim the win in the nightcap. Jokela hit a home run and a triple. Sydney Suhonen had a double, and Brooke Banfield had a triple.

On the softball schedule today…

In baseball yesterday…
• Hancock v Negaunee – no report.
• Jeffers v Ironwood – no report.
• L’Anse took two from Ewen-Trout Creek, 3-1 and 17-3. In the first game, Dean Magaraggia and Logan Dusinski combined to toss five innings of one-hit ball with eight strikeouts. Duskinski had two hits. In the nightcap, Magaraggia had four hits, with two RBI, and four runs scored. Ross Biekkola and Shawn Gibbons each had two hits, and Blake Harden, Zak Kissel and Trysten Muma each had a hit and scored two runs.

Local golf teams will play at the Baraga Invitational at the L’Anse Golf Club today.

Honors continue to roll in for the Baraga girls basketball team. The Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan has named Vikings’ coach Tyler Larsen Division Four Coach of the Year. Cori Jahfetson was placed on the Division Four Best Player List, with Makenna Hendrickson earning Honorable Mention. MaKayla Smith earned an Outstanding Senior Award, and the Vikings were named as the Division Four Academic All-State Team.

Little League

Baraga County Little League will hold its preseason coaches meeting for baseball and softball tonight at 6:00 at Meadowbrook Arena. League officials say they still need quite a few coaches. If you’re considering becoming a coach, please attend tonight’s meeting.

• The Nuggets shaded the Timberwolves 112-109. Denver wins that series 4-1.

MLB

The Tigers held off the Brewers 4-3 last night. Detroit took an early lead with four runs in the second inning. Kerry Carpenter hit a three-run homer. Starter Spencer Turnbull gave up single runs in the third and fourth innings. Tyler Alexander surrendered a Rowdy Tellez homer in the sixth, but Mason Englert and Jason Foley held Milwaukee scoreless over the final three frames to seal the win.

The Tigers will try for the series sweep in Milwaukee this afternoon. Michael Lorenzen will start against Freddy Peralta. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
