Cardinals Win CMC Volleyball Opening Tourney – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School

 

The local high school volleyball season is underway…

  • Calumet at the Cadillac Invitational – no report.
  • Wakefield-Marenisco won the season-opening Copper Mountain Conference tournament at Lake Linden yesterday, defeating Ewen-Trout Creek 2-0 (25-10, 25-15) in the best-of-three championship match. The Cardinals reached the final with a 25-23 single-set victory over the host Lakes. Ewen-Trout Creek dispatched Ironwood 25-23 in the other semifinal.

Houghton and Hancock begin their campaigns at the Kingsford Invitational today.

The Houghton High School boys soccer team hosts its annual tournament today.

MLB

The Tigers rapped out 10 hits in a 5-2 victory over the White Sox last evening. Matt Vierling had two, and drove in two runs. Riley Greene had two, and scored two runs. Keider Montero gave up two runs over five innings. Will Vest got the win in relief.

The Tigers visit the White Sox again tonight. Tarik Skubal will pitch against Ky Bush. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Javier Báez has been added to the injured list with spine and hip inflammation. Ryan Kreidler has been called up from Toledo to fill in.

The Tigers added some outfield depth by signing Óscar Mercado to a minor league contract. Mercado has spent parts of five seasons in the majors with various teams. He had spent this entire season with San Diego’s Triple-A affiliate, until he was released several weeks ago, 

The Brewers racked up 14 hits, and bombed the Athletics 11-3 last night. Milwaukee took control in the top of the second inning, getting hits from the first five batters, and scoring five times. The Crew added two more in the fourth, then put the game away with four runs in the top of the ninth, powered by a bases-loaded Gary Sánchez triple. Rhys Hoskins and Joey Ortiz homered.

The Brewers play in Oakland again this afternoon. Colin Rae will start against Joe Boyle.

NFL

The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule this afternoon when they host the Steelers. Kickoff is at 1:00. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.

The Packers entertain the Ravens in their final preseason tune-up today.

Watercross

The fifth annual Jeff Moyle Memorial Watercross event continues through tomorrow at the Lake Linden Campground. Along with the racing, there will be live music from Outlaw’d tonight. The public is welcome. For the full schedule and details, click here
