Tigers Blow Lead, Fall to Indians
For six innings, the Indians could do nothing against Anibal Sanchez. In the seventh, they erupted for seven runs, and went on to beat the Tigers 9-3. Sanchez was charged with four of those seven inning runs. Ian Kroll gave up an rbi double to the only batter he faced – pinch hitter Ryan Raburn. Al Alburquerque came in with two runners on and no outs. He struck out the first two batters he faced… but then gave up home runs to Jason Kipnis and Asdrubel Cabrera. Kipnis added another homer in the ninth inning.
The Tigers play a day-night doubleheader today. The first contest is a makeup of a game that was frozen out on April 15th. Drew Verhagen will make his first major-league start for Detroit. Kansas City lost… so the Tigers’ lead in the American League Central Division remains at six-and-a-half-games. The win moves the Indians into a second-place tie with the Royals.
Brewers Defeat Nationals
Kyle Lohse pitched out of trouble all night… and the Brewers defeated the Nationals 4-2. Lohse allowed 10 hits over seven innings.,.. but gave up just one run. Scooter Gennett and Khris Davis homered for Milwaukee.
The Brewers play at Washington again tonight. Matt Garza will start against Tanner Roark.
The Cardinals also won, so Milwaukee’s lead in the National League Central holds at one game over Saint Louis.
PL Boys Play for District Title Today
The Portage Lake Little League 9-10 boys defeated Negaunee 12-2 yesterday. Those teams meet again this afternoon at 4:00. The winner will advance to the state tournament.
The junior team will face Kingsford twice today in Norway. Games begin at 2:00 and 5:00. If necessary, a third game will be played tomorrow. The winner of the best-of-three series will advance.
The Baraga County 11-12 girls softball team was eliminated from the tournament yesterday with 11-1 and 10-2 losses to Escanaba.
Florek Signs with Bruins
Justin Florek has signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Boston Bruins. The deal allows him to be assigned either to the Bruins, or their top farm team at Providence. Florek is the first Marquette native to play in the NHL. He played his college hockey at Northern Michigan.
Hancock Canal Run Today
The Hancock Canal Run takes place this morning. Shuttle service will begin at 6:00. Please plan on boarding the shuttle to your race about an hour before your race is scheduled to start. The 10-mile walk will begin at 7:15, the half marathon at 7:30, the 10-mile run at 8:00, the 5-mile walk at 8:55, and the 5-mile run at 8:50. The awards ceremony will begin around 10:15 at Quincy Green. The Canal Kids’ Quarter-Mile Dash will begin at 10:00. For full details, click here.
