MLB
The Detroit Tigers returned from the All-Star break with a 1-0 loss to the Boston Red Sox last night. The only run of the game came in the first inning, as three of Boston’s first four batters reached base safely off starter Matthew Boyd. Boyd settled down, though, and retired 14 of the next 15 batters he faced. The Tigers loaded the bases against Boston starter David Price in the fourth inning, but couldn’t bring a runner home.

The Tigers host the Red Sox again this evening. Mike Fiers will start against Brian Johnson. Pregame coverage begins at 5:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has placed pitcher Michael Fulmer on the Disabled List with a left oblique strain. Reliever Victor Alcantara has been called up to fill the roster opening. Blaine Hardy will take over Fulmer’s spot in the starting rotation. Outfielder Leonys Martin was brought back from the disabled list before last night’s game. Outfielder Mikie Mahtook was sent down to make room.

The Milwaukee Brewers’ July swoon continued, with a 6-4 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Dodgers broke open a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs off Taylor Williams in the seventh, and put the game away when Enrique Hernández blasted a three-run homer off Brandon Woodruff in the ninth. Jesús Aguilar homered for Milwaukee.

The Brewers will entertain the Dodgers again this evening. Chase Anderson will pitch against Clayton Kershaw.

Before the game, Milwaukee reliever Josh Hader addressed his teammates and the media about a series of racist social media posts he made as a teenager. Hader apologized, and said he is a different person now than he was then. Several of his teammates agreed, and supported him during the news conference. Hader has been ordered to take diversity training classes, but will not be suspended.

Finlandia
Finlandia University will host the American Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s and women’s softball tournaments this fall. Games will be played November 3rd and 4th. As the host, the Lions will be guaranteed a position, along with the league’s top three finishers. It’s the first time Finlandia has hosted a conference championship since the men’s Harris Cup hockey series in 2007.

Canal Run
The annual Hancock Canal Run will take place this morning. Because of flood damage along the traditional course, races have been re-routed to end at McLain State Park this year. No parking will be available at McLain. Participants and supporters are asked to park at First Apostolic Lutheran Church, two miles west of Calumet on M-203. Shuttle buses will run continuously between there, the starting points, and the finish line.
