High School
In high school volleyball yesterday, Calumet won the WestPAC tournament, defeating Houghton 2-0 (25-16, 25-14) in the title match. To advance in the tourney, the Copper Kings defeated Hancock 2-0 (25-9, 25-19), West Iron County 2-0 (25-17, 25-13) and Gwinn 2-0 (25-18, 25-14) in the preliminary rounds, then got pas Iron Mountain 2-1 (25-14, 23-25, 15-11) in the semifinals.
In high school football yesterday, Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Bark River-Harris 14-0. The Lakes have also scheduled a new opponent for the final week of the season. They’ll host Gladstone on Saturday afternoon. Lake Linden was scheduled to face Manistique on Saturday, and Gladstone was supposed to meet Gogebic, but neither the Emeralds nor the Miners have enough players to compete.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University women’s soccer team overpowered Rockford University 9-0 yesterday. Addie Budzinski scored the Lions’ first two goals. Alexia Gonzales also found the net twice, and Kirsten L’Esperance scored the games’ final three goals. L’Esperance added four assists, and set a new school record with 10 points in the game. The Finlandia defense did not allow the Regents any shots on goal.
The women’s soccer team plays at Mount Mary University in Milwaukee today. The men’s soccer team plays at Olvet College.
The Lions volleyball team dropped both of its games at a triangular at Lakeland University yesterday. FinnU fell to the host Muskies 3-0 (13-25, 14-25, 14-25), and to Central College from Iowa 3-0 (14-25, 20-25, 15-25).
The Finlandia football team dropped a 70-6 decision at Hope College yesterday. The Flying Dutchmen lad 49-0 at halftime. The Lions’ only score came on a Justin Woolever run in the third quarter.
MTU
Third-ranked Minnesota-Duluth scored all five of its goals in the second period, and defeated 19th-ranked Michigan Tech 5-2 last night. All of the Bulldogs’ goals came off Devin Kero, who was replaced by Robbie Beydoun in the third period. Andrew Bellant scored his first collegiate goal for the Huskies in the second period, and Cooper Watson added a score in the final minute.
The 25th-ranked Tech volleyball team closed out the Midwest Regional Crossover Tournament in Indianapolis with a 3-1 (19-25, 22-25, 25-16, 19-25) loss to 10th-ranked Rockhurst University yesterday. Olivia Ghormley led the Huskies with 25 kills.
The MTU soccer team hosts Wisconsin-Parkside today at noon at Sherman Field.
The MTU football team spotted Wayne State a 10-0 lead yesterday, then came back to edge the Warriors 23-20. Erik Zeboor kicked three field goals. Both of the Huskies’ touchdowns came in the third quarter. Quarterback Will Ark scrambled 11 yards for a score, and Kevin Lee picked up a blocked punt and ran 11 yards for a touchdown.

The Northern Michigan University hockey team edged Michigan State 4-3 last night.
The Wildcats football team lost 30-10 at Saginaw Valley State yesterday afternoon.
MLB
The Milwaukee Brewers couldn’t hold an early lead, and fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-3 in the second game of the National League Championship Series yesterday. The Crew carried a 3-0 lead into the seventh inning, but L-A scored twice off Jeremy Jeffress in the seventh, and twice more in the eighth, to tie the series at one win per team. Game three will be played tomorrow night in Los Angeles.
The Houston Astros took the first game of the American League Championship Series yesterday, defeating the Boston Red Sox 7-2. That series continues in Boston tonight.
NHL
The Detroit Red Wings remained winless with an 8-2 loss to the Boston Bruins yesterday afternoon. The Bruins peppered Jonathan Bernier with 39 shots, and held Detroit off the scoreboard until Filip Hronek and Dylan Larkin found the net in the third period. The Wings will skate at Montreal tomorrow night. Because of NFL football, pregame coverage will begin at 7:10 on KBear 102.3.

The Detroit Lions are off this weekend. The Green Bay Packers host the San Francisco 49ers tomorrow night. Hear the broadcast on 99.3 The Lift.
NFL Hall of Fame fullback Jim Taylor has died. Taylor led the Green Bay Packers to four NFL championships. He logged four 1,000-yard seasons in an ear where that total was truly exceptional, and ht scored the first touchdown in the first Super Bowl. Jim Taylor was 83.
