Calumet Wins Hard-Fought MacInnes Classic – Wednesday Sports Wrap

High School

Calumet reigns as champion of the MacInnes Holiday Classic, after a gritty 3-2 overtime victory over Houghton last night. Each team scored in the first period – Paul Sturos for the Copper Kings, and Camden Markham for the Gremlins. After a scoreless second frame, Gabe Mattila gave Calumet the lead in the third period, and Aaron Kogan’s tally forced the extra period. The Copper Kings fought off a power play in the extra period, before Cam Anderson netted the game-winner off a Sturos rebound. Kogan had two assists in the game. Aksel Loukus made 28 saves for Calumet, and Bryant Lee turned in 36 for Houghton.

North Fond du Lac edged Hancock 2-1 in the consolation match. Hunter Paar scored for the Cardinals in the first period. Tod Anderson tied it early in the third period, but Paar’s second of the night, on a power play, won it for Fondy in the only game of the classic not to reach overtime.

Paul Sturos was named the tournament’s Most Valuable Player. Members of the All-Tournament Team include Calumet goaltender Aksel Loukus; defensemen Kade Farrell from Houghton and Tom Erkkila from Calumet; and forwards Brett Sabel from Fond du Lac, and Gaborik Carlson and Camden Markham from Houghton.
